That is the impression I get as well. Earlier this year a certain member here said something about the Swiss not being in a shooting war for so long they don't even know what a 'combat' weapon should be.
I handled a new Sig 556 Commando today that had the bolt handle horizontal to the bore axis for a change, instead of angled upwards so it will hit the optics, this is a good start. I mean, many of us have been training for the last couple of years to reach under the AK style rifles to cycle the action while keeping our sights on the target and firing hand on the pistol grip, then Sig angles the bolt upwards so we can't reach it. Also, the super duper Sig brand Dr. Optic style sight it was equipped with didn't come even close to co-witnessing with the irons... Que pasa?
Man I hope so... the roll pins on my M&P45 have a tendency to work their way out... which gives me pause. But the roll pins Ruger uses on the Mini-14... oh man... those babies are in there real good.
Hey speaking of roll pins, the roll pin on the upper receiver, is retaining a bushing that the operating rod rides in... correct?
Another question if I may, (as you are the only one I'm familiar with that actually has an SR-556) the firing pin, charging handle, and bolt assembly are standard interchangeable AR-15 type parts aren't they?

I'm only speaking for one rifle. Mine's the only example I've seen and handled but, from various Internet threads, there are at least two different bolt carriers and three different bolts in use.
Some carriers, like mine, have a "national match" configuration with more mass and no machined rails. These are rumored to be made for Ruger by Young Mfg. The other carrier is more of a standard pattern with stepped rails machined in.
The bolts seem to fall into three types. One has gas rings, one doesn't--still has the flange--and one has the flange and rings removed entirely. Again, speaking for my sample only, a standard AR bolt will fit and headspace.
Same goes for charging handle and firing pin.
I understand that SIG bastardized the 556, but most of it was cosmetic. The functionality of the basic rifle stayed the same. The barrel is of good quality with a 1/7" twist and is Nitroferic treated. The rest of the details, sights, handguards etc. can be upgraded or changed. I too, would like to know we these rifles seemed to be damned so much.
