I talked to Mark Gurney again today about my tilt wear. Mr. Gurney would like to take a look at my rifle so it's going back to the factory.

Mr. Gurney was helpful, friendly and receptive to my questions and said he'll make sure my carbine is taken care of before it comes back. I'm confident that he'll take care of me.

    I'll keep you posted....

    Smile Ruger rebound

I just got my 556 back from the shop. They replaced the hammer pivot pin and the hammer itself. They test fired sixty rounds and gave me two free clips. They even next day aired my gun. The whole process took less than a week. I promptly went to the range and shot the crap out of it with every load I could think of. Not a bobble or a hitch. Accuracy was informally tested but seemed fine, An inch at 50 and maybe a bit under three at 100 firing fast when the gun was HOT. So I tip my hat to Ruger. I sent them a thank-you note. I don't know if the trigger has a widespread problem or not. I would be curious to hear if anyone else experienced this problem. If you do, it will be fixed fast. I have put two hundred rounds through my rifle and see no signs of bolt tilt yet. I'm back to liking my new black rifle. The prices are coming down. It's all the same bracket now. The piston seems to work very smoothly. My brass isn't mangled in any way. It's all good.

Here's my buffer tube with 1,400-1,500 rounds fired.

I'm starting to see wear on the sides of the tube in addition to the wear behind the buffer detent.

That rifle is beating itself to death.

Question SR 556 bUFFER TUBE ISSUES

I have no wear on my tube at 200 rounds. How does your bolt carrier look? You say that the rifle is beating itself to death. This is obviously true, but is there wear in other places? I'm wondering if this isn't a problem with most gas piston guns. Maybe if I replaced the spring with one of those hydrolic buffers the problem would be mitigated.

    Phil,

If you take the time to look around you will see that the carrier tilt issue is common to almost every piston gun made. That issue is what prompted an M4 member to come up with a anti-tilt buffer.

As for that Enidine hydraulic garbage. I wouldn't be surprised if it caused issues with the Ruger.

If I had to guess--and that's all it is--as to why I've got some unusual wear, I'd say it is a case of funky tolerances. I'm going to say that Ruger probably gets lowers, uppers, and bolt carriers from several sources. Put someone's tight tolerance parts with someone else's loose tolerance parts and you've got a problem.

That's my guess. We'll see what Mark tells me after he's had a chance to look at the gun.

The wear on the buffer tube is from your bolt carrier tilting when it cycles. The m-16 ar-15 was never designed to coupe with carrier tilt the DI system the carrier moves straight back no tilt. The only fix that i know of is the anti tilt buffer.

Yes, I know piston systems cause tilt. But, if you look at my pictures compared to Mr. Jensen's pictures, you'll see that my Ruger is exhibiting significantly more wear inside the buffer tube. There are a few other Ruger threads on TOS and another site or two and nobody else has the nasty wear I've got. Mr. Gurney told me, from looking at my pictures, that my gun shows wear that their longevity test rifles don't have.

The wear alongside and behind the buffer detent appeared early on and has continued to get a little worse with each range session. The wear on the right side of the tube is new.

I'm sure an anti-tilt buffer would cure the issue but I'd like to see what Ruger has to say first.

What do you have your gas setting adjusted to?
Your rifle has a higher round count right?
