Your rifle has a higher round count right?
As of now, the gun has somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500-1,600 rounds through it. This has mostly been Federal 62gr on setting #2.

I tried a variety of ammo on setting #1 but never could get anything to run at the low setting. The gun would either stovepipe or eject but not pick up a live round. This included Winchester 69gr match, the above Federal, PMP 55gr stuff, Winchester 45gr frangible and several different types/styles of reloads.

I shot several hundred rounds of WOLF 62gr JHP ammo on setting #3 because this ammo wouldn't cycle reliably on the middle setting. I also fired a couple boxes of older Federal 55gr American Eagle stuff that required a wide open gas regulator setting.

Well it sounds like you are running it on the lowest gas setting for the ammo at hand. The wear pattern looks like the other wear pattens that I seen pics of maybe a little bit more. There could be some funky tolerances coming into play contributing to the wear. Its just everytime i think about it as soon as the op rod strikes the carrier thats wear you will have the most force tying to tilt the carrier and at the same time the carrier is starting into the buffer tube right on that edge of the tube. Any way I am sure ruger will sort it out for you good luck keep us posted.

I shot 40rds of Lake City M855 "green tip" on setting #1 and it worked fine. Yes, that's all I've fired so far so it doesn't even come close to the round counts some of you guys have accumulated. However, I thought I'd throw that in there about the specific round fired and the setting.

You know, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there were some slight variations in what's leaving Ruger's factory. The bolts themselves have been different in the tail section (some have the gas ring "hump" but without the rings, while others like mine have no "hump" at all).

I bought another Ruger off gunbroker earlier in the week. It's used but the original owner told me the gun had no signs of tilt wear. He says he had about 400 rounds through it.

I talked to the transferring dealer this afternoon and he told me the gun has arrived. Unfortunately, he closes at 2PM on Saturdays so I'll have to wait until Monday to get it.

Anyway, I will try to get another 1,100 rounds through it over the next couple of weeks and see how it looks then.

What's that saying about a sucker and his money?

I like trhe concept of the Ruger 556 but I will wait for at least a year before considering the purchasew of one, hopefully they get all the bugs out by then.

Gun #2 is here. This is supposed to have somewhere around 400 rounds through it.

I was hoping to get three or four mags fired this afternoon but it ain't going to happen today.

Note that we still have a little bit of cam pin drag but there's really no sign of tilt wear to the buffer tube. There are a couple small flecks of finish wear but no gouge marks yet.

    Gentlemen,
While I have always liked Ruger and it's products, I will agree with Grant on this one: Several AR manufacturers have NO CLUE technically about the AR they produce and sell. Not trying to Knock the 556 and anyone who has one, as I really thought Ruger would do it right, but the 556 is not well thought out. As someone stated earlier, and this is a big clue; the bolt is UNSHROUDED and the hammer is notched! As in COLT SLAM FIRE FOOLISHNESS. This problem in itself will cause problems all it own. And, at least in the 556 I inspected, the BC had the lower bearing rails machined 50% away(from the firing pin area to approx. half way to the bolt). And very poorly done, too. I was shocked at the poor quality of the work.
Further inspection of the weapon also illustrated that the hand guard assembly is roll pinned on! While that can work, it makes disassembly hard and after pounding roll pins out of aluminum stock more than 2-3 times, you will find that the pins no longer grip. This is due to the material(handguards) being worn down from the work of the roll pins being removed and replaced.
And, like people have stated, it's heavy.
Understand that I want Ruger to get it right and fix these less than thought out problems. I would love to see the 556 become a standard in the industry for piston AR's but currently, IMHO, they aren't there. I apologize if I offend anyone. just my $.02

Hey, ABNAK! Got any more range time with your Ruger?

Not yet. Been kinda busy lately, not to mention that my "shoot 'em up" 5.56 stash is rapidly dwindling! I have a SHTF stash but I won't touch it.

    Soon, soon.

    Ruger SR556

I contacted Ruger directly about the availability of 1/7 twist barrels as well as separate complete uppers for purchase..I have a somewhat newish BM and was trying to go the gas piston route to see how that works.. I was told they would pass on my suggestion of the 1/7 twist to marketing but they have no plans to sell the uppers separately. Not really looking to get another lower as I have plenty. I just want the darn upper. Other than that, I have no experience with the rifle but it sucks to not be able to purchase the upper. I imagine that's a big chunk of business for lots of AR manufacturers..most especially piston systems.

    Leave the guns...bring the cannolis.
