Gentlemen,
While I have always liked Ruger and it's products, I will agree with Grant on this one: Several AR manufacturers have NO CLUE technically about the AR they produce and sell. Not trying to Knock the 556 and anyone who has one, as I really thought Ruger would do it right, but the 556 is not well thought out. As someone stated earlier, and this is a big clue; the bolt is UNSHROUDED and the hammer is notched! As in COLT SLAM FIRE FOOLISHNESS. This problem in itself will cause problems all it own. And, at least in the 556 I inspected, the BC had the lower bearing rails machined 50% away(from the firing pin area to approx. half way to the bolt). And very poorly done, too. I was shocked at the poor quality of the work.
Further inspection of the weapon also illustrated that the hand guard assembly is roll pinned on! While that can work, it makes disassembly hard and after pounding roll pins out of aluminum stock more than 2-3 times, you will find that the pins no longer grip. This is due to the material(handguards) being worn down from the work of the roll pins being removed and replaced.
And, like people have stated, it's heavy.
Understand that I want Ruger to get it right and fix these less than thought out problems. I would love to see the 556 become a standard in the industry for piston AR's but currently, IMHO, they aren't there. I apologize if I offend anyone. just my $.02
Ofc. JL
