I agree with Tim. Remington and Ruger producing AR's can only help.
I like it too I am on the fence on Pistons but it has promise, only time will tell but as someone said earlier Ruger stands a chance as they have been around forever and will be there if something goes wrong with your gun. The more ARs the marrier

I liked it too, having handled it for few minutes in the surging mob at the NRA convention in AZ today. Fit and finish looked very good to me--the BCG has a large bearing surface at the tail end which, according to them, mitigates the BC tilt issue. I dunno, I've always thought a hammer-forged bbl would be a good thing too. Would I buy one? Maybe. I'm not that convinced that I need a piston-operated AR; my DIs are fine for my purposes, especially at $1995.000 MSRP. They quoted an on-sale date of 1 June by the way. The fact that Ruger's even doing this is good, as others here have said.
HK also had their rifle on show as did FN with the SCAR light/heavy. Didn't get an MSRP on the HK and FN "doesn't set suggested retail prices" on the SCAR according to the guy I spoke to.

While RGR's market cap of $210M isn't pushing into Google territory, I think it's pretty amazing that PUBLIC companies such as Ruger and S&W are offering what are commonly (if incorrectly) defined as "assault weapons". If someone had told you in 1998 that Ruger and S&W would offer ARs to the civilian market, you would have laughed your ass off. 2009 (or even 2007) levels of civilian ownership of this style of rifle is FAR more widespread than anyone would have predicted in 1998.

I think it's great that Ruger is making this.....but the 1/9 twist would prevent me from even considering it.

Why isn't CMMG's $995 piston rifle getting more attention?

Here's a Barron's article on the two aforementioned companies.

don't many corrections and law enforcement entities use the mini-14 because it doesn't look "evil" or like a military weapon like an AR or MP5 for instance?

My personal experiences with my agency was that my old chief bought into all the "M16s were junk" hype. And that when he "was in 'Nam....." The Mini 14 was better to him because he felt his M14 was better than the M16. They looked the same (but smaller) and had a wood stock, hence it must be a 'real' gun.

Well, I have a can, so I like seeing more stuff come out with adjustable gas systems, piston or not.

There are things about it that I do not like, but you could probably do worse.

There is the 416. They are plenty in the mix and were there early. They are selling vast quantities of them and lots of people have them.

I wonder why manufacturers (Ruger, Robinson,...) insist on only offering 1 in 9 barrel riflings on their piston semi-autos? 55gr ammo is more abundant (and cheaper), but still, a 1 in 7 option would be nice.

1:9 is good up to 69 grain. It really only eliminates 75 and up. Some people believe 1:9 has a longer life than 1:7.
