Ive got one of the non-chromed gas keys on one of my LMT carriers that was purchased last fall. But its not an MIM like Ive seen in pctures here on the forum. From what Ive read here the MIM gas keys tend to split at the staking too....maybe a bit hard.
All my other LMT BCG's have chrome lined gas keys.

Could some of you guys post a picture comparing mim vs forged extractors?
I would like to see the actual difference between the two.
If there are pics already posted I would appreciate a link.

    Thanks,

I am by no means an expert on MIM pieces, but that does not look like a MIM extractor to me.

Usually, not always, there are ejector pin marks on the part. The small circular mark on the flat surface of the extractor looks like an ejector pin mark to me.

I have no other explanation as to what would cause this circle.

The process of MIM is ground metal is mixed with an injectable substrate, then injection molded.
The parts are then heat treated, which burns away the carrier and solidifies the steel. If there are small bubbles in the part during molding that can't escape, these result in voids. There is also a concern of porosity in the finished part.
Properly done, MIM usually won't be an issue.

I sure as heck wouldn't use this process on an extractor or a gas key. IMO, it would be fine for a low stress part like a mag release button or forward assist.

Armalite says they are forged and not MIM.Being that Im no expert either I have to go with what they say.
As far as the mark on the extractor above, its identical to what I have on my new Armalite bolts. If you look closely there should be another mark/circle right in front of the extractor spring...or at least all of mine do.
Like I said the newer extractors look totally different than what Armalite used years ago.The old Armalite extractors were clearly machined with defined edges as can be seen by the very fine tooling marks on the entire surface of the extractors, and no forge/casting marks to be seen anywhere..
I also have BCM and LMT extractors and they dont have the forge marks visible anywhere.
Now I have never seen any comments from folks having any issues with the Armalite extractors,so its just me nit picking Im sure....but you have to admit the marks look a bit suspicious.

Maybe some type of indentation from a hardness test?
