MIM parts can be made to function similar to billet parts, but will never match forged parts for durability.

The most critical measurement to be taken in producing MIM parts is weight. Sadly, this is often overlooked. Dimensional integrity and cosmetics are usually the only criteria. Weight will disclose a porous part, not to mention voids.

It's pretty simple to find a bad part, but molding is a skill, and good molding techs are tough to find. Production managers look at parts per hour, and if the customer doesn't specify to meet a weight tolerance, pretty parts, that are dimensionally correct are good. If these fail, the molding house could care less.

Blame it on part design, engineering, the moldmaker, or anyone else.

While MIM is fine for many things, you have to remember people have issues with lowers made from 6061 and not 7075...or barrels made from 4140 and not 4150 and even the correct 4150.

The main argument is usually these are tools that you may have to depend your life on...what happens when a latch brakes during an emergency reload and you can't release the charge handle. It would have to break just right, but you know Murphy...

Face it, in this crazy market, it cheaper and quicker to go MIM...
Since when have they been using them?

Dammit!!!..........I get so sick of things continually being made cheaper and cheaper!

My opinion on this trend towards MIM and other questionable construction techniques (in stressed applications) is this.................

USE FORGING AND MACHINING OR WHATEVER IS MOST DURABLE .......... I WILL PAY THE EXTRA MONEY!!!!!

Talked with Armalite sales today, and they said that the extractors are not MIM castings as it would not be strong enough for an extractor. They are forged.
    I stand corrected.

I have not seen any LMT gas keys that are MIM,but there are a few folks here that have them and have posted pics of them.So apparently some are MIM.
As far as the charging handle latches...they look to be MIM in the pictures Ive seen. But its pretty clear Im no expert on the subject.
Parts like the charging handle latch, selectors, gas keys etc. I really dont see any issues with the parts being MIM.High load and impact,or critical parts like extractors, hammers, sears etc. I dont think would be an appropriate application for that process.
    Again Im no expert.

    Verified.
I received a BCG direct from LMT 3 months ago and it had a MIM gas key that was not chrome lined.

Checked my LMT BCG machined gas key and its chromed lined picked it up about a little over a year ago Its also an enhanced BCG if that makes any difference.
Getting kinda worried about hearing all this MIM parts and crappy ammo leaving the factory sounds like manufactures are cutting corners to get this stuff out there.
