Just to be clear, I am not admonishing anyone or attempting to put any "mutha****as" in their place with my comments for owning or posting pictures of rifles that lack what most consider to be basic features of a serious rifle. My comments are geared toward those that imply that their technologically challenged weapons are superior for "real" use than those that are more appropriately attired.
I can see the utility of a stock rilfe. I have had to teach people with A2s and A1s how to effectively use the guns in their natural state against violent opponents. No matter how much better any optic works, it was irrelevant.
If the owner is a high-power yellow-glasses wearer, it makes sense to own (and take pride in) a traditional A2 type gun, as that is the horse that wins races in that game. While I do not particularly care for HP type events (and yes I am competative in them), some do, and that is just fine. The thing I like most about those type of competitions is when I pick up one of my "fighting" guns afterward, especially if I put on body-armor. It highlights how far we have come, and how much more efficient I am now.
-As a side note- I have seen guys that are nothing short of phenominal with iron sights when shooting a HP type course perform even better with an ACOG on the same course of fire.
If the owner is a collector or enthusiast of the platform, I understand the allure of a stock A1, XM177E2, or A2, to round out the "retro" collection. I would hardly admonish someone just because they choose to spend their money in that way.
When it comes to Kalashnikov weapons I understand and embrace the idea of having a bone stock rifle for training in the event of a combat pickup, or if the individual will be working under conditions that prevent the addition of enhancements. I embrace the concept of having an AK laid out to maximize it's performance, since the platform is incredibly viable as a "fighting" gun.
What you do with your guns is your own business, and what you like is your own personal preference, it all comes down to application. The problem is that some people simply do not have the same application or mindset as those of us that choose or are issued the AR as a fighting platform.
Excellent post F2S....and on point as usual.
I have other carbines that I keep around that have white lights and optics, and those are the ones I'd go with if needed, but there is still a lot of enjoyment to be had with the more classic stuff.
It's also a great way to introduce off duty Boy Scouts to EBR's and basic marksmanship....
