Look closely at the pic with the second set of rings in it. see where the sliver is pulled away at its furthest point look at the ring can see what looks like 2 tiny nicks.
Bet you a beer thats were the burr is snatching that ring apart .

Wow! Lots more carbon on the charging handle than I would expect. I wish I could see the rifle! Do you have a pic of the chamber/barrel extension with the charging handle removed from the upper? The bolt face is remarkably clean. Is there any damage or score marks in the channel where the bolt cam rides in the upper receiver? What are you using for a buffer and spring?

if the rings havent rotated any since the damage occured, the damage is in the right spot for thomas' theory. could also be the bolt bore was milled a little crooked.. would better explain the dragged appearance of the ring, but is less likely.

either way, it needs to go back. for some reason i was thinking Gee and Arr tactical, not global tactical... you're screwed for the three-day weekend, call first thing tuesday.

I hope you're right. I think I'll have someone look at it to get a second opinion, especially since you can see it better in person.

Ive had rifles eat rings before, as evident in the pic below. Rifle still functioned fine, didnt know it happened until the class was over and I was at home cleaning the rifle. Never happened in 10-25 rounds though, looks like youre due for some new parts.

I can honestly say that I have not seen gas rings being eaten up like this before. I would be very curious to see what would happen with a set of McFarlands in there.

    1. Where did you get the gas rings? Were they assembled onto the bolt?

    2. Who makes the bolt, if known?

Also, I highly recommend in the future that you spend the little extra money and get a firing protrusion gage and headspace gage to properly check your weapon. Especially when building a parts gun of unknown origin. Also, you may want to consider a carbine upper receiver as well.

This is were he got the BCG from http://global-tactical.com/gtsdennys...roupm16-1.aspx

What do you think Iraqgunz? I say its a burr inside of the bolt carrier.
Hey says he can feel a very slight burr at the gas port on the side of the carrier.

Considering that the gas rings travel over the two gas ports on the BC I am guessing that you are right. I would try and deburr that area and see what happens. There really isn't any other cause that I can think of other than something that is out of spec.
