    Carry Gun Ammo Choice

Greetings Gentlemen. I was curious about your choice of carry ammo for your sidearm. I've usually carried Remington Golden Saber .45acp in 230gr. Whats your favorite?

    Depends on the firearm.

I use Speer Gold Dot ammo in my handguns because it has always performed very well for me and it usually comes in as one of the top performing types of ammo in testing.

I carry their tailor made BUG load in my Smith 442, a 135 grain hollowpoint loaded to +P pressures.

In 9mm I carry either the 124 grain +P loading, or the 147 grain loading. I try to stick to using the 147 grain rounds in my Glock 26 because of the short barrel, but to be honest any one of my 9mms can end up loaded with either load.

In .45 ACP, I carry the 230 grain JHP and occasionally when I am running low on hollowpoints I carry 230 grain ball ammo. My current stash of .45ACP ball is Remington.

For .357 magnum, I use Remington's 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter hollowpoint ammo loaded to +P.

In .44 magnum I use Speer's 270 grain Gold Dot loading, but I typically only carry my 629 in the woods to defend against bear.

The important thing is to choose a round that A. Functions properly in your weapon of choice and B. offers reliable performance in testing. For a good series of suggestions on carry loads, try looking at what Doc Roberts (who is a member of the IWBA and who tests ammo regularly for PDs and the .mil...) suggests here:

    Glock 17 Remington 147 JHP

Remington might not be the best out there... but I like it.

Clean ammo, cheap, readily available and after thousands of rounds (in 9mm and .223) never had a failure to fire. Also groups have always been good.

Speer GoldDots, either 180gr in .40cal or 147gr in 9mm.

    Cor-Bon DPX in the 9mm Glocks 19 & 26.

158 grain LSWCHP in the S&W 642, but may switch to the DPX in that too.

    9mm: Cor-Bon 125gr +P or Federal 147gr JHP
    Don't carry these much but:
    .357: Cor-Bon 125gr JHP (4-6") or Winchester 110gr SJHP (2.5")
    .45: Rem 230gr Golden Sabre

I'm not too picky. As long as it's a name brand hollowpoint, I'm good.

    .45 Federal HST 230gr,
Cheap at streichers for a box of 50, like 19.00 or close to that.
