    223/5.56x45 bolt rifle

What is the affective range of a 223/5.56x45 bolt action rifle?
One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.

    .223 Bolt Gun Effective range

I shot this 5-round group with an old Remington 700 BDL Varminter from prone using only a Harris Bi-pod and an improvised sandbag for the buttstock. This was a personal best for this rifle.
As for the effective range...Effective on what?
I know guys who kill prarie dogs with this cartridge out to 1000 yards...and coyotes out past 400. As for effectiveness well that is a very subjective question.

This is a 700 PSS in .223 1/9 cut down to 20". It will easily make fist sized groups with 69gr bullets out to 500 on steel silhouettes all day long if you can read the wind a bit. If it had a faster twist I would shoot some 77's in it and push it out much further.

I know jack about .223 bolt guns. Do they make one in 1/7?

You'll be hard pressed to find a factory .223 bolt gun with a good twist rate for stabilizing the heavier bullets. I think the Tikka's come in 8 twist, but that's all I can think of off of the top of my head. Remington would have had a winner with the new 5R, but they set the twist rate a 1-9, which makes little sense to me.

I'm having a 223ai built with an 8 twist Rock, specifically for flinging the 75gr amaxes out to 1k.

My NRA "Service Rifle" has a 1/7.7 Kreiger and it shoots the 77's nike there is no tomorrow. When I shoot this barrel out I will buy a Kreiger with the Remington PSS contour for it. As it is, I use 24g of Varget and Nosler 69's. The barrel is free floated and it has pillars torqued at 65"lbs. It will give me groups of just over 1/4" at 100 on a very regular basis.

I agree, if the .223 Remington 700 came in a 1/8 or 1/7 it would be a very big hit.

Let's be honest, a 223 bolt gun is just a fun rifle to shoot all day long.
