Something I'm surprised nobody has hit on...use a chamber brush.
Everything else can be dirty as hell as long as it's lubed, but you really do want a relatively clean chamber.

I have. But not on my ARs. I have cleaned my AR barrel after just one shot. It was a one time thing where I was just going to run a patch thru, but found that the barrel was just as dirty as if I had fired 20 rounds. You might be surprised at how dirty a single round makes an AR barrel.
He is so full of shit, I don't give much credit to anything he says/posts. You have to be negligent in your cleaning to do damage. The oldest barrel I own has been cleaned fanatically over the years, and is still quite capable of sub 2 MOA at 100 with irons.Crowns and throats have been damaged many, many times by overcleaning. Pat Rogers says that he has found that overcleaning is worse on rifles than just shooting them.

I would think that not cleaning would have the potential to cause more damage than cleaning.
I know Pat Rogers has several guns that just get lubed and if that works for him great! I personally would rather just clean it up than store is fouled up.
Besides it give me something to do while watching tv and smoking a cigar.
Only hits count......you can not miss fast enough to catch up
I guess... I'll have to clean it after every range time then.
at least I get to use my JP bore guide. bought it at 30 bucks and it's just sitting in my shelf.

If I shoot it I clean it, if you shoot it YOU clean it. I clean every thing in my valt once a year, and after usage, even if I dont shoot it. I had my duty gun get rusted while in the holster, on my hip.
I do live in Oregon where it rains even when the suns out so rust is in the picture. Cleaning is a good way to know your weapon, and as has been said : "Happness is a warm gun"
