To clarify, I paid around $600 for my bushy, years ago, so the current prices really don't apply to what I was saying. What I was getting at, is that it's better to have a rifle than not.

(BTW, doing it all over again, I'd have bought a Colt had one been available back then). The needle/haystack analogy was simply to show that finding a decent deal, where they are actually available within the past few months has been a bit tricky. The prices have gone thru the roof, and I'm sure many of us here have experience a completely empty gun store or two a few months back. I've owned guns for decades, but to be honest, my very first "online purchase" of a gun was all of 4 months ago. I guess it was just one of those deals where I like to hold it in my hands before dropping a crapload of money. I am still not real comfortable, as I'm sure are others, with buying stuff unseen. It's good to see that chart about quality features and be able to find information about people who've ordered certain brands (honestly, up until about a year ago, I'd never heard of Noveske, by my own fault, living under rocks and stuff).

What compelling need does he have that he needs to buy one now? If there isn't one, then it is more prudent to wait a few more months and get an AR that is a consistent proven performer.

Good point. I guess I just still cringe at the price tag being I paid less than half of what some are going for now.

I guess I am having some internal struggle with all the negative views of Bushmaster. Again, let me stress, I am not a big fan of brand names soley based on their names, but I've really never had an issue with mine. If it works, I use it. If it had choked, I'd have sold it off and moved on.

Probably just me justifying to myself that I didn't make a bad purchase all those years ago. It's dumb on my part, forget I brought it up.

I'll tell you this though... I've learned more about the AR in a couple of weeks than I have in 13 or so years so, thanks for that to all.

Sometimes they work like they should. But, you must realize that you do not have an HP/ MPI tested barrel/ bolt, you probably had to stake your castle nut and bolt carrier screws and you don't have a true 5.56 chamber. The other thing is that you are dealing with a sample of one. I have 500 of them and I have had to correct or fix everyone. In addition they all had rifle extractor springs and inserts.

Right now the Bushies are going for around 1000.00 and AFAIK there is still a backlog. As a matter of fact I am fairly certain that someone could build a good carbine with quality parts for about 1100-1300.00 dollars.

Why can't people just answer the OP's question? He asked about DoubleStar and Bushmaster and everyone has to start in with their tired Colt, Noveske, LMT rhetoric.

Give it a rest and answer the OP's simple question!

We did. We said neither because there are better options for a. More Money b. The Same Money and c. LESS MONEY

So why would you choose either? (Since you didn't answer his question either).

I'd have to agree for that price you can get a Colt for just a bit more. Having found this site a little while ago I was put off at first but now I'm thankful for the wealth of information.

My first AR is a Bushmaster. It works well and only had a magazine issue which a dremel fixed. Magazine was the problem not the rifle. I got it for little over 800 in 06 or 05 NIB (A2M4 model).

I bought on of their gas piston uppers . . . utter fail . . . that became an AK through trade. Complete waste of my money.

I stay away from them now due to the gas piston fail I went through.

That said, for the money I would get a Colt or something. No Bushmaster is worth a grand or more in my book anyway. I know the panic messes everything up. Then again if you own nothing at the moment then wait and get something really good because that may be the only one you ever own.
