how would one go about getting rid of the rattle between the receiver extension and the stock?
i'm thinking about disassembling the stock and using electrical tape on the receiver extension.
any ideas?

OK, let's back up second what type of AR do you have? You do understand that there are differences between MILSPEC lower receiver extensions and commercial ones, right? MILSPEC tubes are smaller in diameter and commercial tubes are larger. A commercial stock will fit, but it will usually have a little play- hence the rattle.
A MILSPEC stock will not fit on a commercial tube and if you attempt to force it then you'll end up damaging something. So if you have Leapers airsoft crap on there, that would make it a commercial stock. Are you saying that the tube, stock, spring and buffer is all from Leapers? If so, that is your problem and I suggest you remove it and sell it on eBay to the airsoft clans.
As for why no tape, it's fairly simple. The tape will eventually gunk up on the tube and you will have issues extending a collapsing the stock. Get a quality tube, stock and hardware and replace what you have. I am 99% certain that most rattle issues that you may have will disappear.

i completely understand the difference between mil-spec and commercial. my stock was bought as a kit, and it is for sure a commercial stock. as for putting a $100+ stock on my beater rifle... out of the question. (besides, it's alreadty staked in place.) this was my first build and it's made to be tortured. my first car wasn't a bentley, neither is my first m4. https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=31143
my next build will be of much higher quality parts. with a higher quality stock, (i like the lmt sopmod personally). now that i'm familiar with different vendors, parts, etc. i know what to look for and who to stay away from.
Poly,
If it's a beater and you aren't going to replace it then all I can say is get used to the rattle. Sorry, I am sure that's not the answer you were looking for.

Wow. After reading both your posts poly all I can say is wow. I paid right at $100 more and I've got BCM, LMT and Magpul parts - good to go truly well-built mil-spec parts. A little research and listening to the Industry Professionals and Subject Matter Experts (like Iraqgunz) would do you some good... Hope that rifle never sees serious use and if it does, I hope it doesn't shit the bed on you.

2" section of bicycle inner tube 1/2 over the stock, 1/2 on the tube should keep it from rattling excessively and will also keep your whiskers from getting rudely removed from your face. ;p
