    Favorite Paper Targets?

Just wondering what paper targets people prefer (and why if possible) when training with a pistol/carbine/shotgun at ranges of 50 yards and less. I tend to prefer IPSC targets but they are expensive taking 20 to the range with you is a PITA.

    Thanks.

Paper plates in 6" and 9" sizes. The price is right.

Random pieces of cardboard cut to be backers (stapled to my holders just like IPSC targets) with the ultra cheap-o 8" paper plates, and I've got boxes of old business cards that are perfect for smaller targets.

    For speed work: 5x8 cards
    For accuracy work: 3x5 cards

After training up there, I fell in love with the CSAT targets. Paul uses them for pistols and rifles both. Any hits not in the head or "spinal box" simply count as misses. The dots are great for training holdover.

    Plus they're pretty inexpensive.

With that said, I still shoot plenty paper plates.

I like these, nice and cheep. If you order 1000 or more then the price is only 14 cents ea.

I pick up IPSC or IDPA cardboard targets, whichever is cheaper at the time. I also buy a roll of construction/butcher type paper and use that to make repair centers for the cardboard targets. Since I only shoot at the upper A zone and the head, the cardboard lasts a long time. Use masking tape to tape holes and to outline the 6 X 6 upper A zone.

I also cooked up some dot targets in Word and Photoshop. You can get 6 3" dots and 2 4" dots on a 8.5X11 sheet of paper. Tape only the misses with masking tape.

I'm a cheap old bastard. I haven't gotten to the stage of reusing staples yet.

If I head out to the old "side of the hill" shooting range out of town and there's someone shooting those... I.. uhhhh skip my shooting session that day.

I bought a couple steel 10" targets and if I need it to be smaller, I just repaint the circle smaller than the OD of the target. They're kinda nice. You can put one at chest high, and the other about 3' off the ground. Besides, shooting steel is more fun in my opinion because you get immediate feedback.

PS. I guess I shoulda at least answered the question. I've used 3x5 cards since I got out of college 15 years ago. Between my wife and I, we had a metric ton of them left over. People used to laugh at me at the indoor range. I just stapled one up and ran it out to 30 feet and told them to have at it. No more laughing from most of them.

Paper plates with a 3" sticker in the center... Works well for both pistol and rifle.
