Just a couple of brief definitions to those who may not know:

Quality Control "QC" - a process whereby you insure quality by inspecting and testing the products you make.

Quality Assurance "QA" - tightly controlled and constantly measured production processes that are proven to result in a quality part.

Japanese car manufacturers pioneered QA. Its cheap and effective.
The military and NASA still insist on QC. Its expensive and actually less effective than a good QA program, in most cases.

Many people have a hard time grasping the idea that an assembly of parts that has not been inspected can have higher quality than an assembly of parts that is inspected.

When was the last time you heard of someone blowing an engine in a Camry?

I used quality control as a generic term, applied to a process whereby the manufacturer does what it takes to consistently produce a good product.

No point in bogging down the post with terms like Kaizen, Six Sigma, ISO-9001, etc....

    Good point.

I guess part of what I was trying to imply is that if the production process is properly managed, traditional quality control operations (like magnetic particle inspection and magnafluxing) can go away with no ill effects.

My other hobby is flying. I'm active in experimental aviation. (at least I was until we had a baby) It is astonishing that with all their traditional QC processes the major engine manufacturers have both had to institute HUGE recalls because brand new engines were built with faulty crankshafts.

Again, when was the last time you heard of Toyota or Honda recalling a years production worth of engines because of bad cranks. Their production process is such that it is nearly statistically impossible for them to make that kind of mistake.

Instead the dinosaurs that are Lycoming and Continental painstakingly test every crank. Traditional QC.

What the hell does this have to do with guns. Simple. Properly engineered MIM components, produced by a good process will work perfectly.

I suspect that the problem with MIM parts is that they are less tolerant of slopiness than are processes like forging and machining from billet.

Incidentally casting is another process that if done right is very good, and if done wrong is terrible. Ruger does it very right.

Not to pick, but a few years back, Toyota V6s (including Camries) were having oil system problems and crapping out pretty regular. As a pilot, I'm well aware that neither QA or QC is ever 100%.

    Hey!
My Toyota Camry V6 is almost 13 years old and is working just fine. My mechanic at the Honda/Toyota/Volvo House says that my Camry V6 will go another 100,000 miles easily as long as I maintain it on a regular basis.

You got a good one. My dad has also had 2 ES300s (upscale camry) with no problems. That being said http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/lex...OHGORMUNJN7II5

I just received my Geissele SSA trigger yesterday and I was very surprised that this much ballyhooed trigger and hammer are MIM.

Mr. Geiselle addressed this issue, he uses no MIM but does use investment castings...
