How about a polymer free float MOE hand-guard with a 1913 Picatinny spine? Perhaps with quick-removable hand-guard sections that could be interchanged with different length units like on the Masada.

I've got an idea for a monopod insert that would screw into a TangoDown vert grip and pop in/out as needed...
