I have an LMT 10.5" with a FA BCG an I run an H2 buffer, I found that it was short stroking with Wolf 62gr .223 this weekend and just switched the H2 buffer for a carbine and it ran no problems after that. Weak Wolf ammo!

Perhaps try the Pig-Tail Gas tube from Brownells. Item# 100-000-554AB.

If the gun runs on NATO pressure ammo I would stick with that and change nothing.
If you really want to run SAAMI ammo you might want to try a standard CAR weight buffer.
    This is the correct answer.

This would further complicate the problem.

Standard buffer resolved my similar issue w/ my LMT 10.5" upper and practice ammo.

After 200 rounds of XM193 on the H buffer, the upper ran 100%.
As suggested I tried a carbine buffer with remington .223 and it ran 100%.

My question is if LMT ships their complete 10.5" mrp's with carbine buffers, are they expecting everyone to use .223 / commercial ammo?

Thanks for all the help guys.

If you run 5.56 with the gun set up that way, it will just be "overgassed" for that strength/preload buffer spring and bolt/buffer mass.

An overgassed gun recoils more than it needs to and wears more quickly. Overall LMT is doing the right thing. In most cases, its better to have a reliable, overgassed gun that works with all kinds of ammo than to have a gun that only works with one specific kind. Even if that means it wears more quickly with the more powerful ammo.

Pretty much every gun mfg builds things that way. If they didn't, you would need to change springs when going from Corbon to Blazer in your handguns.

Essentially yes. Think of it as more of a CYA thing from LMT.

This way consumers won't be constantly seeking warranty repair for their LMTs when they are running nothing but .223 through them and they don't work.

As dcmdon pointed out it will work with both 5.56 and .223 with the carbine buffer, however it is less than ideal with 5.56.

Other companies such as Bushmaster circumvent this whole thing by just over sizing the gas port to begin with which is definitely the wrong answer.

How has this thread gone so ARFCOM?

An LMT 10.5 won't run on some of the weakest ammo you can get? (REM .223)

    No shit!

What are bushmaster's port sizes? I've also read the Bushmaster has ports on the smaller end.

Robb. Do you remember what the port was on that Bushy you cut down to 12.5?

I don't remember off the top of my head Mark, sorry. To be perfectly honest the only ports I have ever physically measured is my LMT and the Colt M4s in my armory when I was in the Army.

I seem to remember from previous discussions on this very subject that Bushmaster uses a larger gas port so as to reliably cycle .223. This is an issue down the road due to excessive port erosion leading to a grossly oversized gas port.
