Thank god, I almost went with a DPMS but the magpul furniture on the colt caught my eye, now I need to put optics on it and i am thinking about a quad rail.

The Colt with NO furniture would have been a better buy. Just a bonus that it came with the nice MOE stuff.

    Whoops

My first AR Bushmaster A2 pre ban (bought in 1994) I thought it would be my last chance to own one. I have wanted to buy a 6.8 for while. The sat. before Xmas at a gun show I lost my mind and bought a Ruger 556 in 6.8. Now I think I made a mistake. What do think major or minor mistake. Will I ever find ammo it? Please be nice. signed natureboynates dad Greg

Alright so Windhams are made by the same folks who used to make Bushmasters..................I don't get your point!!

Seriously, if i can tell you my Windham is definately a better quality build than my older Bushmaster, then apparently those employees learned something along the way.

Besides, How are the employees any reflection on ability to build an AR? Seriously they may have wanted to build quality guns maybe their supervisors were alright with shipping out defective guns, we don't know.

All i know is both my Bushmaster and Windham have worked as well as my Colt, the only malfunction in thousands of rounds i've fired with the 3 guns i have were Magazine/Ammo related.

The only things un- milspec on the Windhams according to their specs is the 1/9 twist rate, the reciever extension tube and i'm not sure about the buffer. As far as the "F" marked front sight tower? When that affects how reliable the gun is i'll be on here crying about it, but for now........................

Besides it's all academic now anyway, in another month it will just be those of us scored an AR15 of any type and those who missed getting on the bus before it left them.

I don't get the gun snobbery, i really don't. If you have the gun whatever make it is and are happy with it, then thats why we buy a gun in the first place isn't it.

Not everybody is going to go 3,000 round carbine classes or competitions every chance they get so most even if they bought a gun from the cheap seats they will never have a problem anyway even if it's a SHTF carbine, because if you are in such combat after SHTF that you've fired enough ammo to break the gun you were probably killed already anway if you spent 1000's of rounds out of a semi auto in SHTF.

PS I would not get a Olympic arms or a DPMS if it was free!! I 've heard way more horror stories about those two brands than anything else in the industry.

natureboyz dad Greg, have no fear look at "Silver State Armory","Hornady" and "Remington". for 6.8 ammunition.

I don't know why that round never became popular enough for the ammo to be carried in most gunshops. It seemed like a really good round to me. A AR sized round with .308 style ballistic curve.

I would actually like to find a 6.8 upper for my Bushmaster A2 profile still just to expand versatility.

You coulda made a worse mistake believe me.

When these guns are built, they have a barrel with no holes in it and a barrel extension. They torque the barrel extension onto the barrel, and use that as an indicator of where to drill the gas port. On top of the barrel extension is a alignment tab that fits into a slot on the upper receiver. When the gas port has been drilled, they fit the front sight base, and drill the taper pins out.

The front sight IS where it is. The only thing that could possibly help is replacing the barrel extension, but you could go through dozens before finding one that is better...and most might be worse. It's not something easily fixed.

That's the type of thing I was referring to by "serious jerry rigging." Not something I'd be interested in tackling. The easily remedied sentiment is what I was posting in response to.

Brand aside it's easiest to look at the rifle at the gun counter and see whether it was crooked or not.

I have a S&W lower and a bushmaster 1/9 twist Hbar upper. It has ram great for several years without failure. I put it together without knowing much at all. Am I going to buy a second AR from one of the top tier manufactures? Yes. I wouldn't on the other hand worry about grabbing my rifle as it sets now if I had too. Their a different me els of guns for all people. Some people at happy with $600 AR's and some people want 2k and above. Just the way it is. If I was depending my life on a rifle I would spend more money and get a more proven rifle but for plinking cheap is good. The 1/9 twist is frowned upon but if your only shooting 55 gr or so I dont see the problem.
