Why I bought a DPMS first

Being a AK enthusiast and C&R collector at the time I was kind of closed minded towards the AR 15. The forums I frequented didn't help it either. I was still green and AK's were cheaper so on a whim I walk across the street to a shop and grabbed a DPMS Panther Lite 16 on my lunchbreak. I have nothing negative to say about the rifle and if I could see it I can get very close to hitting it pretty much. It ran steel case and brass, NATO a and commercial spec ammo fine. In fact the rifle never malfunctioned. This was around 05-06 maybe. Anyway if I had the money the general consensus then on top line AR15's put RRA at to tier aside from Colt. Now the evolution since the sunset has dramatically changed options and given us the ability to choose a higher quality AR and know the difference. I am still learning a lot!

I traded the DPMS for a FAL a few years ago and have since built an AR and things have changed a lot since then too. The word Mil Spec was barely understood but I still enjoy the M4 style build.

Designating yourself with a Type A personality only means you talk too much.

We have a bushmaster that we leave in one of the ranch trucks. Didn't want something nice that I'd worry about leaving there year round. It's a real pos compared to my Larue and my DD. probably should have done a cheap build instead.

I started ARs with Mega lowers and CMMG upper (2009 timeframe). At the time it was price that drove the upper purchases.

The uppers never failed me and allowed me to learn the platform. Sold the uppers for no loss and upgraded, since Mega lowers are solid.

I bought my first AR in 2004 after the sunset of the ban. My only options (because I couldn't find a Colt in my area) was between a Bushmaster and DPMS. The guy behind the counter convinced me to buy the Bushmaster because it was more "mil-spec" than the DPMS. After shooting for 2 years and suffering numerous malfunctions and parts breaking I traded it for a Kimber custom 2. Little did I realize I was trading one lemon for another. I abandoned ARs for a couple years when I got into black powder shooting until 2010 when I learned about BCM and other up and coming companies supposedly producing better quality firearms. Since then I've been a dedicated AR shooter, with a significant AK hobby on the side.

An LEO friend suggested the Colt LE6920.

That's what I bought and haven't regretted it, but like most I've replaced a few things.

I now have a Geissele trigger, Bravo Gunfighter Charging handle, 2 Mount-N-Slot Quick Disconnect points and swivels to accommodate my VTAC sling.

For optics, an illuminated reticle (11 power settings) Mueller Speed Shot 1X4 power Red Dot scope. Yeah, I know it's not a super duper costly scope, but I love it. And, it's very simple to aim (just a red dot) and holds it's zero.

A random AR15 google search led me to TOS where the dizzying array of AR configurations was presented to me.

Ended up lurking for a number of years, trying to decide what friggin company and configuration I would go with for an AR.

The main question was what would I do with it.

When I decided to try my hand at match shooting, CMP Highpower specifically, the question was answered for me, an A2.

The go-to NMA2 turned out to be the RRA NMA2.

    So that was my first.

Got my first AR at a gun show when i was 18. Went in with the intention of buying a Remington 700 and walked out with an AR. There was only one 700 in the whole show and when I went to look at it, there just so happened to be a 14.5 carbine sitting next to it for the same price of $800. Upper was a CMMG 14.5 pinned with a DPMS commercial lower Had i known what i was looking at i would have left it, but of course I just had to have it. That gun NEVER ran right regardless of what I changed. Eventually sold it and used the money to buy a 6920 through Grant after about two years of reading on this site. I must say I am very pleased with my Colt and will never go back to low quality, unreliable weapons again. You really do get what you pay for.

I've always been a 7.62x51 fan. I never dreamed I would own a 5.56. Then I went to the range with a friend who had an ar. I had to rethink my position on ammo and came to the conclusion that 5.56 was okay and that the ar platform was a viable option. To make sure, I purchased a lesser known m4 to try. I liked it and then came here to do more research.

    Re: Why'd you buy it?

I'd always wanted one, and a night time hog hunt in TX had sealed the deal. I had gun that I had no use for so had some funds available. Wally World had a black Friday sale on Sig M400 magpul editions for $897. I pulled the trigger and can't wait to build another with the knowledge I've gathered here.

Simple: I was 22 and didn't know any better. I thought 'an AR is an AR is an AR'.

Then I had an M4 FTE on me. I started researching, which led me here. Then I sold it and bought a DDM4V1.

Since then I've built a few, bought a few, sold a few, but I still have a few rolling around in the safe.
