I've got a 28 year old cast PWA lower with a NESARD bargain basement 16" parts kit on it that probably has close to 20,000rds on it.

This was possible because the stars aligned just right and a series of "Happy Accidents" lead up to a rifle bing slapped together with parts that fit well together and were relatively free of material flaws.

I now pay the big money so that I can buy a rifle from people who can build a rifle like that 99.99% of the time instead of once in a blue moon.

I will admit that I recently inherited a DPMS Oracle 7.62 upper and went right to work with a chamber polish, Troy rail, extractor spring upgrade, etc and even though I don't have enough rounds through it to know if it's going to be reliable it makes nickel sized groups at 100 yards with ammo it likes so at least I am not polishing a turd if it ends up needing gas system and bolt upgrades to finish a weekend long rifle class.

Back when I first got my AR it was an DPMS A2 HBAR. Didn't know any better. This was before I found arftards and before this site was up. First thing I did after learning about them was purchase an A2 FNMI upper that was part of the contract overrun. All I shot was LC M-193 so no problems with it.

Now my ARs are BCM LW Middy and Armalite A2 rifle.

there's a lot of people come around and post something to the effect of "i bought this DPMS last month, signed up here, and learned that it's not the greatest of choices, so i'm _________ (getting rid of it, fixing it up, etc)..."

this isn't at all a ripfest on you or your weapon. i'm just interested to know WHY you chose the weapon that you did, before you knew- what research did you do? how available was information? did you have problems finding information? did you get recommendations from people? what web-sources did you investigate? books that you read? etc.

back when i first started out in the AR world, information was nill. there were a few books out, but they focused on function, shooting, cleaning, stripping, etc- there wasn't really anything out with great technical information. furthermore, there wasn't 1/20th of the selection to chose from- more often than not, if you couldn't afford/could find colt parts, you were left with no-name gunshow parts or Quality Parts Inc (bushmaster) parts- which were actually, next to colt, the only manufacturer with a name that put any degree of quality control into their processes. My first build was a ban-compliant attempt at a carbine, and it was about 50% bushmaster, with a few colt parts and the rest were unknown origin. if i were to have purchased a complete gun, it would have been an Armalite or Bushmaster, I'm sure. fortunately, i did get a little inside information from a gunsmith i'd met at a gun show, and assembled something pretty decent. i'm just curious as to how much has changed, what the word is on the streetz, etc. so share your story, por favor.
I bought a DPMS once back in the day because it was priced $450. I figured it would be a fun beater gun and it was. I got a Oly also back during the AWB because it was pre-ban and used the receiver to build off of for a more modern rifle. When the AWB ended I sold it to a friend behind the lines in NY.

My very first AR15 was a Bushmaster patrolman carbine. I was still unfamiliar with the AR platform at the time, but I got an excellent trade deal on the rifle.

I traded a M&P40 + $270 cash for the Bushmaster, essentially costing me $770 for a LNIB AR15. This rifle was made before the Freedom group acquisition of BM, so the rifle was still a good quality AR for a newbie.

    Reasoning behind my purchases:
    -$$$
    -availability
-time (to hunt down parts and build my own upper/lower, which never happened).
-live in ban state and the BCM upper I wanted they could not modify to ship to me.
-first rifle was Stag Lower and LPK, Magpul stock. Rainier Arms Upper w/DD barrel, RA BCG, Magpul 2 piece carbine hand guards (later changed to Troy 13.5). Absolutely 0 issues since purchase 4 years ago. Modding it since to suit my needs.
-starting SBR w/PSA lower. PSA because of availability issues in April, 3 days before CT's new ban was scribbled into the books.

On many occasions in my childhood I learned that the harsh sting of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of "low price" is forgotten. This has saved me from making poor purchasing choices.

Another important thing is to NEVER be in a rush to buy or sell, you'll put yourself on the wrong end of the deal.

I pick up a DPMS for 550.00 bucks from Gun World in WI. I have a Smith&Wesson AR before getting the DPMS. I have put alot of rounds though them with no issues. The cost and the location of DPMS (only 3 hours away) it seem like a good rifle. I have changed things on it but who dont. Is it the top of the line no but it will get the job done.

Now the big question is what is the job you want your rifle to do. I don't think I could bet my life on a DPMS.
