A conservative weekly average would be around 500 rounds pistol, 500 rounds M4, 80 rounds bolt rifle. Shotgun varies too much for a weekly average (sometimes none). Then again, I do not pay for the majority of my ammo. Needless to say, I tend to stick with and shoot the calibers that I have access to.![]()
Since ammo went crazy, the vast majority of my training rounds have been from my 9mm AR. I'll shoot local IDPA matches with it and shoot the steel at the range. I'll only shoot long distance with the .223 when I'm prepping for a match or something like that.

I am a security contractor, and I work about 6-7 months a year in Afghanistan. While overseas, we generally have unlimited access to 5.56 and 9mm, so I try to get to the range twice a week. I probably shoot about 200 rounds of 5.56 and 300 of 9mm a week while at work - Let's call it 26 weeks away, for 5200 rounds of 5.56 and 7800 rounds of 9mm; a value of roughly $5500 that I don't have to spend out of pocket (Pretty ****ing sweet!).
At home, I tend to shoot pistol a lot more than rifle (I find that my pistol skills are more perishable than rifle skills, and also that being a good pistol shooter helps me be a good rifle shooter). I shoot .45 ACP at home, around 200 rounds a week - call it 5200 rounds a year for about $2200 that I do spend out of pocket.
I count myself lucky (as far as shooting, anyway) because of my job - I get 5200 rounds of rifle and 13000 rounds of pistol a year for a cost (to myself) of $2200. If I was a pure civilian it would cost around $7800. The flip side is that I have to be away from my family for half a year, which isn't so cool.
I calculated my cost at about $.42 per round for 5.56 and 45 ACP, and $.30 for 9mm. I certainly haven't spent nearly as much on firearms as I have on training (here we are in July, and I've bought exactly one firearm so far this year).
