    Optics for 3 gun?

I'm a USPSA shooter (not a very good one at that), and thinking of setting up my M4 for 3 gun. If I'm going to shoot poorly and use up a lot of good ammo, I might as well have fun doing it.

My gunsmith suggested getting a 45-degree (to the right, I'm a righty) handguard mount and attaching a red dot, and then using a scope on the flat top.

First, I've done a lot of research on the red dot, got that covered. I'd prefer not to go floating barrel if possible - and I notice most floating hanguards have 90 degree mounts, not 45 degrees. What would you use?

Another question; what scope works well for 3 gun? In a previous lifetime I've been a precision smallbore shooter, so I know good optics for 100 yard shooting for that. What's appropriate for 3 gun? I'm not looking to put a $600 scope on this rifle.

    Opinions appreciated!

I'm in the process of deciding on an optic for an N4 Recce basic upper for 3 gun and hunting in close cover. I'm not read to spend the big or even bigger bucks yet cause of other projects/priorities.

I'm leaning towards either the Weaver V3 or the Bushnell 4200 1.25-4X (from Amazon for $316)

It really depends on who's rules you're going by.

I shoot mostly USPSA rules multi-gun. This means for Tactical and Limited no secondary optic. I use close range iron sights and 1 primary optic. For Open class I use a primary variable optic and the close range optic is a Dr. Optic red dot.

I use a Trijicon TA01 4x scope and a 1.5-5x Leupold Vari-X III German No.4 Illuminated scope. The more I shoot the less I like the Leupold. I want ultimately the 1-6x Swarovski Z6 or the 1-4x Schmidt and Bender Short Dot. Neither are interested in 3gun. So I need to find what it is that works best for me. So the search is on.......

I find it interesting that your scopes are relatively low power. USPSA targets are a heck of a lot bigger...I'm used to the difference between the 10 ring and the X ring; my last scope for 100 yard use with my Anschutz was a Nikon 32X variable, 50 mm lens.

I had to stop shooting smallbore because of a heart condition including tachycardia (fast heart rate). During the Nationals at Perry last year, my heart rate on the line was about 140. It was darn close to impossible to score well with that scope and 140 bpm; the target was jumping all over the place.

I prefer low power variable scopes. I have had good luck in matches in my stage with this set up.

I really like the Swarovski but its very expensive.

Who makes that extended PMag? Capacity? It looks like the same coupler used on the Lancer 48 round magazine.

    Thanks,

A lot of guys are liking the new Burris XTR 1-4x.
I might pick up one of these to try, I really like the reticle.

I know a couple of guys using the IOR 1-4x, nice scope but their customer service leaves something to be desired.

People not wanting to spend a lot of money are using the Weaver 1-3x 1".

I'm gearing up for three gun too. I think it is interesting that you don't want a free floating barrel? In positions and with barriers, you are going to be putting some torque on the barrel, any specific reason you don't want a FF handguard? YHM makes some FF handguards that I think you can put rails on at 45, or it might be GG&G? I think most people use the JP tube, or a 45 adaptor.

Can't wait to see your set-up and hear about the shooting.
