    Question on Ejection

    Today my buddy & I were shooting AR15s from adjacent stations.
    I noticed his spent cartridges were flying back to the 4 o'clock postion. Mine at about 2 o'clock. He was shooting a Colt Match target. I was using a Stag 15 model 1. What would account for the difference? Is it meaningful?

    brass ejection position varies depending on the weapon and ammo.. i dont remember the positions in relation to pressure, but if you're using weak ammo or your weapon is under gassed, brass is gonna land far forward or rearward (dont rmeember which), and an over-gassed weapon and/or firing hot ammo will land in the opposite.

    As a matter of fact he was using 62gr Brown Bear HP & I was using 55gr. Wolf FMJ.
    Oh well, just another "why does it really matter" question. Thanks.

    Just thinking out loud here but, Could it be that your gun is cycling at a faster speed where your cases hit the brass deflector and bounce off, While his cases hit the deflector with less energy and just basicly slide off of it? Or mabye the other way around? once again just thinking out loud.

    My daughter had the same issue about ejection with her RRA NMA4 yesterday. most of the time they would eject to the 2 o'clock, sometimes they would eject to 4 o'clock. Last night while she was cleaning her rifle, the extractor spring fell out. She leaves for Camp Perry tomorrow so I didn't want to just put it back in without a no kidding guru taking a look at it. I also didn't want the USMC Rifle Team Armorer to fix it at Perry (personal pride....daddy sending daughter out with a rifle that wasn''t at 100%, I'd be buying beer and doing push ups).

    Anyways, once again, Virginia Arms specifically Rob (Gotm4) hooked me up and corrected the extractor spring and fixed the stake problems with the gas key.

    The below pictures where taken in rapid succession, I wanted to get a good after action review done with her.

    She only uses Black Hills 77gr Sierra Match King (Blue Box remanufactured) in her rifle, she's had it for three weeks and the failure occurred after 326 rounds down range.

    My unofficial research and opinion is this....

    The faster the bolt is traveling rearward, the farther forward (1 o'clock/2o'clock) the brass will fly.

    My 14.5" carbine flings brass about about 3 o'clock. When I put the silencer on the bolt speed is way up, and the brass flings to the 2 o'clock position and flys farther out.

    My 20 inch AR puts the brass back at 4 o'clock where a healthy AR should.

    This is in agreement with my experience, and I think that bolt velocity (bad ejector not withstanding) plays the biggest part in brass pattern. Loss of ejector strength seems to pattern the brass closer to the firer. This is just as I remember, I haven't really studied the phenominon, as it is pretty unimportant (to me) in the grand scheme of things, especially when compared to extractor springs and key-staking.

    this is correct, you'll also notice that sbr's and some piston guns eject forward indicating that they are unlocking earlier in the cycle.

    To All, Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm still new to this game trying to get as much knowledge as possible. Could changing out the buffer spring slow down the bolt? There is no marking on the buffer. I assume it's carbine level. Any thoughts?
