Any form of encryption is absolutely forbidden within amateur radio.
The Midlands I have have privacy channels. Basically you select your channel hit the program button again and it gives you a range of privacy setting to choose from, I assumed that the privacy settings were basic static encryption. (when you assume you make an ass out of u and me, so maybe I'm an idiot). I can make and post a video of the process and show pictures of the owner's manual that came with them. Maybe I was mistaken.

"Privacy" on these units is a misnomer.

It's essentially a limiter, in that, the two radios are generating a sub-audible tone upon hitting the transmit button to open the squelch on the receiving radio.

    So, it goes like this:

Radio 1 and 2 are set up with "Privacy" codes enabled.
These codes are a sub-audible tone generated when the PTT is pressed.
If the two radios don't have the same "Privacy" code set, the squelch won't open up on whichever radio is on the receiving end.
If the two radios do have the same "Privacy" code set, the squelch on the receiving radio will open up, and you will be able to hear the radio that is transmitting.

What the privacy channels do is remove interference. The intent is to *virtually* increase "channels." You can have 10 radios all communicating on the same frequency, but only the radios set to the same "Privacy" channel will be able to communicate with each other.

A radio with no privacy setting enabled will be able to hear everything being transmitted.

The best way to look at "Privacy Line" tones is to think of them as interference rejection. They are very much *NOT* private...

    Hope that makes sense.

We always talk on Digital with our 4100s on random freqs. It’s an easy way to get some privacy.

Except I don’t talk to Outlander because he’s never wanted to chat.

The people who don’t enjoy it are most definitely nobodies.

Bingo ... you can't beat a good Icom HT or Yaesu. I'd steer clear of the chicom made Beofeng but that's just mho.
