I completely agree with your comments that all guns should be treated as loaded guns, and I grew up in a household where my brother and I were not allowed to even "play guns" with sticks.

That said, I'd guess any member of law enforcement in your community would NOT appreciate that paint job.

    To each his own...

I can't find any laws against it here. I'm not saying that there are not any in other areas. I'm LEO and couldn't care less what color you paint your gun as long as it is not pointed at me. Most kids don't have access to training firearms (red, blue, etc.) and if confronted with a firearm, I will treat it as real until shown otherwise. There is NO, I repeat, NO reason why anyone (child included) should ever point a weapon at a LEO. Sure, I had cap guns and the like when I was little; but I knew not to point my toys at kids that weren't playing with me (who also had toy guns) and especially adults or LEO. I would have had my ass beaten. It's all about discipline. That said, my child will not have toy guns and be taught that guns are deadly tools and must be respected (4 rules.)

airsoft toys have blaze orange tips so people won't SHOOT the person (kid) holding it. lets not totally nullify that indicator.

painting your muzzle device blaze orange is about as extreme as you can get, on this topic... but back to painting other colors, what difference could it possibly make? my blood-red AR is never going to be confused with a training or less-lethal weapon. when was the last time you saw a less lethal AR? and even if the possibility of confusion was there, who's going to be confused? the owner of the weapon? no.. the person he's shooting at? maybe, and maybe that's perfectly fine.

everyone has seen crazy paintjobs and anodize colors on ARs. can you seriously tell me you'd re-holster your weapon if the subject in question was holding a blue AR? if something that simple it gonna trip you up, you probably need to work on some things. 'cause if i'm in a situation where i've drawn a bead on someone who's holding anything that might be a weapon, i guarantee i will do nothing different if it's all black, tan, red, blue or blaze orange. my sights will stay on target until you cant use it against me, and i'm gonna light up if you point it at me. this should be everyone's policy.

if you don't want to die at the hands of someone with a painted AR, keep in mind people paint them. if you don't want to die at the hands of confused cops, don't put yourself in a situation where you'll be standing around holding a training AR surrounded by confused cops. two easy steps to long life.

    Well said.

    Possibly... but paint is cheap.
If he changes his mind, get him involved in the paint prep and make it a father/son project.

Use krylon or something that can be removed with a little elbow grease rather than a bead blast (like what would be required for duracoat etc).

If he gets older and wants to change the color, give him a scrub brush and some solvent and tell him to have at it.

This is one of mine and I also have a Cav Arms blue lower, both of which given a training range environment might be assumed by some to be training weapons. To me that is irrelevant as I am not in law enforcement and spend no time on "training ranges". In my view any LEO (not preaching here) would be well advised to consider anything that looks like a weapon to be a weapon until proven otherwise regardless of color now days. I am aware of the difficulties law enforcement has with all sorts of toys. They are training range colors in your environment not mine. I would stop short of the orange muzzle idea but the idea had crossed my mind out of spite for some of the overreaching excessive feel good legislation that some municipalities have to offer. The latest example of which in my area is the University of Boulder outlawing nerf guns because they might be mistaken as a weapon. I understand the reasoning but give me a break.

The pistol in the second picture below is also a toy yet it functions as a blow back cap gun and ejects shells as well. Since the beginning of firearms children have had replica toys of some realistic from. Requiring safety orange tips or outlawing realistic replicas doesn't solve anything (understanding this is only personal opinion). In my view it makes people think less about their own safety by having a presumed safety net.

If it looks like a weapon regardless of color it is a weapon until proven otherwise.

I'm new to this forum, but I'll say this.

1.) Who the hell picks up another guys' property period, much more a gun and start screwing with it at a gun range without speaking to the owner? I wouldn't dream of doing that, unless I just wanted to get shot or cussed out. (as you should be) He's not using this in a training environment, but at a gun range, have you ever seen someone not doing a training drill at a gun range with a toy gun just to carry around?

2.) The other thing is the stock and hand guards are red, why don't you guys have problems with the Hello Kitty guns? The receiver is unmarked and unmodified, along with the barrel and pistol grip.

All of that aside, That's awesome you'd do that for your kid. That's being a great father. Big +1.

I try to make going to the range with new people as fun as possible, to try to encourage them to keep going. I make sure they're safe but on their first time out, that's my primary concern, safety, then how they shoot as a secondary, etc.

    Good job.

Red designates a weapon for training?
