Dont like the tuning fork effect so I took the vortex off my XCR recently.
There is a guy I shoot with that has a Blackout on his XCR and the ping is ridiculous. Obnoxious even.
Kein Mitleid Für Die Mehrheit
What Happened to the American dream? It came true. You're looking at it.
I just started playing with the AAC Blackout non-suppressor mount FH's. I first replaced a Vltor VC-1 and used the same A1 style split lockwasher I had under the VC-1. The AAC seemed to ring just slightly louder than the VC-1. I then decided to swap out another VC-1 with an AAC, and went without any lockwasher, relying on the Rockset. NO ringing, unless you flick a tine with something and even then it is almost non-existant. I went back and removed the washer from the first installation and torqued that one down directly against the barrel shoulder also. Ringing gone. The more solid abuttment against the barrel appears to damp the vibration nicely. Both barrels mentioned are Colt 6920/6940 series. A statistical example of two, but interesting to me...... A buddy has one he is waiting for me to install on a BCM HF. The sample size will increase by 50% soon.![]()
Negative on the pics. IIRC their are similar installations pictured on the AAC website. No lockwasher or crush washer is the recommended manner of installation, along with the Rockset, although I was told by AAC that using a crush washer is fine if one desires to time the tines to place one at 6:00.
PS. The insertion depth of the threaded portion of the barrel is also a change when removing the washer. That should have a dampening effect also.

Depends on the type of barrel. A LW barrel is going to be a catalyst for a louder ping. A shorter heavier/stiffer barrel isnt going to be affected as much. This is just based on my experience with these types of FH's (AAC and Vortex).
Personally doesn't bother me at all. My Triple Tap also makes a sound, and is as close ended as you are going to get.
I'm chiming in here because I've had the same worries in the past. Working in audio engineering, I'm keenly aware (and annoyed by) unwanted frequencies and artifacts in my work. When researching mounting options, the forum comments and videos had me worried; I searched high and low for an 18-tooth phantom, but AAC stopped making them a while back. Here's my experience:
Holding the unmounted Blackout FH's in your hand, and the end with something hard will give you a tuning-fork style ring, which in a quiet room will go on for a few seconds. I have a 762SD which I've only fired on 5.56-caliber platforms so far.
Mounted to a 16" midlength LW barrel profile, the ping is audible through surefire plugs a split second after unsuppressed report. It's nowhere near as annoying or long-lasting as some youtube videos would have you believe. I don't mind it at all. If it's go-time, and you've got no ear pro, the sound would certainly be annoying, but that's the least of your worries at that point.
When suppressed, the ping is no stronger than the recoil spring noise from some rifles.
On an 11.5" BCM upper, the FH pings no more than a second tops when tapped (unlike the 16"). The FH is up against the shoulder and properly torqued/rocksett applied, so hopefully it's not a mounting issue. Still waiting on a tax stamp to run rounds through it.
I can't hear a thing when I shoot my AAC's. The accuracy also seems as good or better than with the VC-1 or A1.
