Call me old school but I like the MilSpec commonality. Colt used to use this castle nut many years ago. They no longer do. I love KAC and have several of their products but it still hurts to own the $250.00 URX wrench.
I understand the aversion to getting new tools when what you have works with what you already have.

There's probably a $300 KAC castle nut wrench for sale.

    J/k.

    But seriously it's probably $300.

Btw, thanks for the hookup on the SR-15.

Thx for info above. I have a mod 1 pick up this year but didn't have that castle nut.

From looking at it, getting it off was my concern as well. Doesn't look like the Hammerhead (tool of preference) would be as effective as on a traditional one. But as you point out not much need to change it up. However I do change some out to add A5s.

The KAC castle nuts are VERY secure from the factory and I would not be concerned about one coming loose. The only issue I had was that I wanted to install a Noveske QD endplate and all my wrenches were for the standard nut. Finding a single pin style castle nut that won't break off in the process is tough. The key is to have the lower well secured in a vise and to apply steady, strong torque.
While that castle nut works out of the factory, this is the exact issue. If the end user wants to run a different end plate, there is no such option without specialized tooling. Again, another case where the SR-15 package is a bit too pigeonholed to work across the entire market.

I always apply heat when working with torqued-on devices.
If you overheat you can wind up causing the aluminum tube to expand, making it seat tighter, so I only heat it for a few (10-20) seconds at a time, try to loosen the nut; if it doesn't give, apply heat again.
I have not yet had one that I couldn't pull or damaged my tools.
I understand the frustration that comes with both.
