Gee, THANKS. I've already dropped 25 pounds since May (was 240# at 5'6", now 215), and I can still crank out a ten-minute mile when I have to--not even prediabetic, very good numbers on cholesterol to the point that the doc had to do a second set of tests to confirm because she didn't think it was possible to get those results with my height-weight. The entire POINT trying to get back into run-and-gun is a form of exercise I actually ENJOY unlike the drudgery of weights and jogging. Anything to say about the EQUIPMENT, or just wanna cheapshot the deskbound five-by-five all day?

    1. Congrats on the weight loss and making a change but (and no offense)... 25 lbs since May is pathetic for someone who was 240 and 5’6.” You still look like you’re still about one heaping plate of bacon chili cheese fries away from meeting IraqGunz... As a reference point I’m 6’1” and have dropped 20 lbs since August. I wasn’t obese to begin with. A person who isn’t obese to begin with can safely cut roughly 1 per week... if you’re obese, which you are (no offense), you can go a good bit above that with minimal effort. If you started in May you should be down at least 50 lbs right now.

    2. My 76 year old grandmother that suffered a stroke last year can power walk a 10min mile so I’d hardly call that “cranking it” but ok....

    3. Congrats on you’re number... apparently somewhere along the line you have some good genes.

    4. Run and gun is not a form of exercise. If it was most of the people I see at the weekly USPSA matches wouldn’t be fat.

    5. Exercise isn’t supposed to be fun. I don’t enjoy my workouts... at all. I enjoy how I feel at the end and I enjoy being in shape. The fact that you’re avoiding the “drudgery” of weights tells me that you’re weak minded.

    6. Nobody should be jogging for long... jogging is what you do for a couple months when you’re trying to condition your joints and bones for running.

run and guns are not a form of exercise but a motivation to keep you doing something active in order to perform better at the competition. No one expects to get exercise from it as they do not come up very often for participation. You need to decide what your end goal for your gear will be. I compete in the minimalist division so I run with a light weight chest rig, just enough mags to get through the course (usually 4) and just enough pistol mags. Depends a lot on your shooting abilities and knowing that you can make the tough shots without wasting a mag. Ran a 10k where we caught up with a guy struggling as he was loaded down with way too many mags for a low round count match. I think he had 5 or six mags of each (only needing 40 rifle and 20-30 pistol) and was not conditioned to carry all that weight. We walked with him a little while to give him some motivation and then went off again. He had the biggest smile when he finished and agreed that he grossly over estimated his ammo needs. If that is the motivation you need to get and see how you do then more power to you. I learned a lot about my gear from the 5-6 I have done. Loctite is your friend, don't mess with your gun after zeroing it for the match or alter items on it, pay attention to the course directions so you don't get lost (added an extra mile to my 10k going the wrong way after a stage), leg cardio is your friend cause you are lugging 20-30 extra pounds in just ammo and guns alone. There are other divisions for body armor and weighted gear if you want but for the first one I would run minimal gear to get the feel for how your stuff performs.

Diets are a lifestyle and there is no one size fits all way of doing it. Whatever works for you that you can maintain then keep it up.

Apparently some feel that if you add "I mean no offense" or "with all due respect" you can say as much dicky stuff as you want. I have seen guys well over 300 lbs doing run and guns and they were there just to challenge themself and have fun. Not everyone has to be competitive.

This shit has gone way off topic. It’s a great thread (when followed) so let’s keep it on track.

I have bigger chainsaws (MS-261 w/ 16” bar and MS-661 w/ 28” LITE bar ) but I think the 193 is probably ideal as it’s small and light enough enough to be held by a lanyard from a belt and when using a narrow Kerf bar and chain, it still cuts adequately.

That’s a typical military style response, and may seem harsh. However, while the delivery doesn’t seem constructive, it’s valuable advice. Even if you’re not going to combat, lowering your resting heart rate through aerobic fitness will improve your scores during Service Rifle competitions.

Offtopic: Actually, my doctors and I are working on all that already, a slow gradual transition after almost forty years of mostly sedentary deskbound wonkery. Not everyone here is a door-kicker or professional face-shooter, in my case I'm a researcher/historian academic type who when you guys were scoring touchdowns on the varsity football team was that fat kid in the corner hidden from the world behind a wall of books... the kind who wasn't much in a fight but wasn't bullied into being a homework-mill mainly through the power of a mean kick to the balls. Sorta like trying to make a turn with a supertanker loaded full of Alaskan crude... you make turns very slowly and give things time to adjust to the change before doing more. Hence my raising the question about hardware which I don't have a plan for rather than meatware which I do--even though looks are a little deceiving, I have to buy my shirts a size larger than "right for my body" because I have a twenty-inch neck--it's been an issue even when I was down to 160 trying to get into ROTC in college, though not quite as disproportionate then. (That carrier is cinched as tight as it will go and STILL a little loose.)
