    Swedish Mauser Model 96 Brake

I recently acquired a Swedish Mauser Model 96 and it has this brake on the barrel:

Is this a standard brake, or is it an add-on to the original weapon?

    Thanks for any help.

I've certainly never seen a break like that on any Mauser.

The Swedes used wooden bullets in initial training and they equipped the 96's with blank firing adaptors that would shred the wooden bullet at the muzzle. Does it look like it could serve that purpose?

You are on the right track.

It seems that this is not one of those wooden bullet shredders, but an American made brake that is screwed onto the same threads as that device.

Thanks to both of you for the help.

I have a Swede of some sort that came with a similar FH. I think you are right on the money when you said it is an American aftermarket item. That rings a bell.

But Swedes DO come naturally with the threaded ends...

the flash hiders are an American creation. The threaded muzzles were meant only for the wooden "bullet" blank shredder. When all those Swede mausers came over here with the ugly threaded muzzles people just had to find something to put on them.

here is one of those blank wood bullet shredders:

Where are you guys finding the model 96s? I've been looking for one for some time. I heard they are accurate and I like the idea of the 6.5x55.

Search for "Swedish Mauser" on gun broker. They are all over the place once you start looking but they aren't as cheap as they used to be (naturally). Remember when they were $80-$150 back in the 1990s?

for more info on Swede mausers see:

Allan's Armory often has them too:

I barely knew about mausers in the 90s and I would have laughed at the thought of Swedes with guns.

Thanks for the links. I'll keep my eye out for a good deal.
