I've looked a lot into this topic and the X300/X400 are great weaponlights. I am also one of those guys who always has a 6PLED on me or next to my bed. You won't go wrong with the handhelds, but a great deal is the TLR-1 and remote switch kit from Botach tactical.com----you have a pressure pad and battery door for the TLR-1/2 and can actuate it from a VFG or put velcro on the switch and put it directly on the weapon somewhere. Works very well, and I'm putting my TLR-1 on my 6.8 build as soon as it's completed.

What works for me is the SF.X300 mounted on my rifle at twelve o'clok. I also have/utilize the SF.M2|SF.6Z w/Malkoff Devices drop-in LED. Of course Your Methods May Vary accordingly so!

Hope you find what you're looking for and Enjoy!

You may also find that two lights with the same lumen rating will have a different "throw". One may project a tighter beam further while the other may have a wider dispersion and therefore a shorter range. The X300 will fall in the latter group.

There are light-geek forums where they go into great detail on all of this. I've been trying for quite awhile to come up with a more basic and simple approach with a few of the more commonly used weaponlights but haven't had the time. The goal is to take 3-4 of the most popular lights with similar lumens and get photos of the throw at a few different distances.

Are the Surefire X300s really that great to justify the price?

I've been thinking about getting one, but have also considered cheaping out for a cheaper option, like this streamlight for about 1/3 the price:

I have a Surefire E2D that I love, but it also gets a lot more use than a weapon mounted light would. Can the streamlight be relied upon to work when I need it?

Surefire G2 LED w/ VTAC mount

It is hard to beat a Surefire G2 LED with a VTAC mount. The entire package is about $85 plus shipping. If you want even more light, the Malkoff drop in LED is another $50 (I get mine from Tactical Design Labs). I run three of these setups, one on my duty rifle for over a year, and I've yet to break one.

M4C Cliche: It depends on your uses; is this a defensive weapon? What are you mounting it to? What sort of optic are you using? Are you using a VFG? What sort of budget are you working with?
I agree. I have a G2 mounted in a Viking Tactical mount. Great light and a great mount both for short money and that is a plus too! The mount was about $25 and the light was about $36. I plan to upgrade to the G2 Led soon.

I have the X300 on my Glock 22 and a G2 Led on my duty belt. The G2 is much brighter 80 or 85 lumes V 60 for the standard6P/G2.

I've carried Sure Fire lights at work since 1992, they are simply Awesome lights. I still have my old 6P, it's in my pistol safe with with my first Glock, no light rail on that gun.

I think of Surefire as I do HK, they are the Gucci and Prada of the gun world.

Would I like to own one? Hells yea!

Are they overrated and overpriced? IMO, yes.

Would I still buy it if I had the money? Of course.

Are there alternatives at a lower price point that provide quality and dependability? A big YES.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather save money where I reasonably can and spend it on what matters more, ammo.

    saving $

I am all for saving money too, but we are talking $36 for a Surefire G2 and $25 for a viking light mount. I'm not sure how you could save any more and it is a. Quality setup that will do what you need. Practice ammo is obviously important but positively identifying your target is required. You can not do that in the dark with out a light.

    Semper Fi!
