Shooting From a helo video- TNVC

Tactical Night Vision Corporation has uploaded a YouTube video of someone (Vic?) shooting a carbine at steel targets from a moving helo.

The shooter is getting consistent hits using his micro aimpoint.

Looks like he is using a KAC SR15?

The assistant is sporting a Magpul Dynamics patch and a beard. Hmm....

Good stuff. I wonder if it's hard to do. Can anyone relate how steady a helo can be or maybe relate it to shooting from a moving car?

That looks like one of Costa's ARs. At one point you can see the Boresight Solutions textured KAC rail panel.

I have only done it many moons ago. If the pilot is good and "in his groove" it is not too difficult. Shooting and hitting from a moving vehicle is difficult, so I would say it is easier from a helo.

At Paul Howe's SWAT sniper course, he mentioned to treat it like you would if you were shooting down from a building, and that it wasn't a big deal.

There was an outfit on the east coast that used to offer an open-enrollment class on that. Open, with some pre-reqs though. Very expensive, too.

We do aerial shoots 2-3 times a year. Non magnified optic is best. Monkey line or similar, outside of the helo on the skid seems to offer the best view / stable platform. Weapon hooked to helo on a bungee works well, however we have another helo shoot coming up where we are going to try a new set up that seems to work better.

As for stability, of course much relies on the power of the helo, wind conditions and pilot. However when all is working well, very good hits can be achieved. Mostly with a non magnified optic. Even 3.5 or so power creates issues. As stated the stability factor of the helo can often be compensated for, by being out on the skid where the legs and body can help to be a shock absorber. Sitting rigid in the helo is not nearly as stable.

We had a guy along for a ride on one of our shoots about 2-3 years ago and he took this video. He was testing the bungee set up on his rifle and let me give it a whirl. The rifle may look familiar.

Hmm, haven't I have seen a video where he shoots from a tall building.

The BAD, a helo sling; I wonder what else Travis has in his little bag of tinkering.

    Surf,

Thanks for the info. I like the idea of using a brass catcher, but wonder how much the one in the photo holds, who makes it, and how hard it is the dump it out. I never really had a warm and fuzzy feeling about using a brass catcher, since it seemed that it increases the odds of having a malfunction if a piece of brass kicks back into your chamber.
