    It's more like 17.2 or 3.

The only reason I own a 14.5 with a pinned Mb is to mirror my work gun for use outside work such as personal skill building or non-government classes. While I can feel the difference between a 14.5 and a 16 inch gun, the practical application of them makes the little difference in barrel length invisible.

Anything a 14.5 gun can do, a 16" middie can do better.
If you want a little gun, get a SBR in the 10.5 to 12.5 range.

This; especially since the communist state that I live in doesn't allow the unwashed masses to own SBRs, regardless of tax stamps.

Gentlemen, I put a CMMG pinned 14.7" w/ A2 FH on my S&W build and just could not believe how much better it "swings"! You would not think a 16" carbine would be any different, but guys, the 14.7" does handle better. Try one if you can find it.
Ballistically, any difference between a 16" versus 14.7" barrel? Some, I'm sure, but IMHO, negligible, at best.
But, boy, do they handle different. I was surprised enough that I recommend 14.7" pinned barrels to my Officers.
And, what I heard about the M4 barrel length was 14.5" is what it took to mount a Bayonnet correctly. God Bless the Mean Green(Gray?), they gotta have a bayonnet on a MOUT weapon?? Gotta love it. Oh well, it works.

BTW, Diver, thanx for your service(And all of you VETS!). I caught your tag line. I was SF volunteer in '82 but couldn't hang even with the AirBorne due to my crapped out knees. Raced Motocross from when I was 14 til I was 28 and then joined. Bad idea...knees were(are!) toast and I didn't realize it until ground week. That was the end of my active Service. I have since done 22 years reserve service however(still in!). You guys on active duty don't worry about home! We got your back!

Registration sucks, but you get used to it. Buying handguns requires 3 trips to the police station and a 2 week wait everytime, rifles you buy with your annual permit and take to HPD on your way home. Have to have an affidavit for a firearms safety course, hunter ed card, or memo from unit commander or agency before you can buy a handgun as well. No pistol mags over 10 rounds, and the killer, no NFA. Only people who can carry legally here are those covered by LEOSA and VIP's that the police chief deem important enough to carry amongst the common serfs; mere commoners no need apply. Thats the price we pay to live in paradise.

I am sure a 14.5 inch barrel has its convenience applications but why limit yourself with having a pined flash suppressor/compensator that you cannot remove to modify your weapon if needed. A 16 inch barrel will give you more muzzle velocity and will stabilize your rounds just a little better at farther ranges. What is a 1.5 inch difference worth anyway? Cool factor or practicality?

I was thinking more along the lines of weight (which would probably be negated by the PWS comp I would pin on it) and maneuverability. It is still something I am taking into consideration.

Living in a non-NFA state limits my options on what I can own. If I lived in an NFA state, this wouldn't even be a question, and I'd have an SBR.

Besides weight and overall maneuverability, of course.
I don't see any benefit. Even counting weight and maneuverability I think the difference is so small it doesn't justify the hassle of a pinned muzzle device.

My thoughts exactly. If I am using an AR that doesn't have a tax stamp it will be a 16" gun, the difference (1.2+/-") between a 16" and a 14.5" pinned to be 16" doesn't make any sense for me. I have both a mid-length and a carbine length gas 16" AR and if I am going through the expense or hassle of an SBR than I would go really short and get a 10.5". I had a 14.5" with permanent pinned FH and sold it when I got my 16" mid-length.

Pinning takes about a half hour, silver soldering takes about 10 minutes. Not that big of a hassle considering I dont have a need to remove my flash hider or brakes; ever. Like the other guy said, if SBR was an option, pinning wouldnt be.
