Looking for potential small "back up" red dot

Ok, so I am planning for my first AR and want to have my bases covered and am doing my research now instead of rushing later. My semi-plan is the BCM middy with a leupold scope for varmint/target. I want to put a small red dot on an angle for extreme close up shots ( i had a coyote within 10 yards already this bow season). I want something similar to the JPoint but would like to spend a little less. Im looking for some good suggestions for a small reflex red dot that wont break the bank.

While we are talking about this idea, ive been thinking of a YHM angle mount to put it on. Any other suggestions here?

Thanks for helping the newb out.

I run a Burris Fastfire II on a YHM 45 degree angle mount.

looks good, but still seems pricey for me right now.

Is this something i can even do on a budget, or is this one of those areas where you really do get what you pay for?

a burris fastfire on YHM mount IS a budget setup. you're not going to get much better value for your money.

In the nature of total disclosure, I must admit that I blatantly ripped off the idea for running my Fastfire II on the YHM mount from the Militarymorons.com website, I owe a lot to their site (I wish I had their budget!).

One thing to keep in mind with JP/Doctor type sights is that most will not work very well in zero-low light. So if you are doing night stalking it would limit your choices to the models that have manual power levels, which are the Meopta M-RAD (Yet to be released in US) and the Insight MRDS (Spendy). Safariland has one that has a manual on setting, but it is intended for bright sunlight and will be less than desirable in low light situations. There are the slightly larger mini red dots like the Aimpoint H1/T1, but again they are on the spendy side. I think Konus and Primary Arms make sites with a similar size to the Aimpoint H1/T1.

Good luck and keep us posted on what works best for you.

The RDP-II IS a Fastfire II. Interesting find.

Hmm, many differences even though the body housings may look the same. Actually, the RDP is closer to the Doctor optics, they both use the same footprint, but the Doctor works better in very dark conditions and it has a better mount.
