Hows this...USCG yep..Coastie. Retired in Oct after twenty. My MOS was Boatswainmate, however what I consider my real MOS my speciality as Surfman. I drove the MotorLife Boats on the days your own Mom wouldn't try to save ya! I joined mostly because I watched way too much TV back in the 80's. Too much Miami Vice, Emergency, ect ect. But never regreted it a minute. Most folk don't even know the CG is part of the military. Heck we have fought and fallen in every war this country has been in, and yet ya never hear about it. I'm sure nobody even knows the Coasties are in the home streach of getting our Tridents!! Yep thats the SEAL trident.-WW

I originally enlisted to be a 45B, got my parents to sign the papers that way. After some thinking, I decided thats not really what I wanted to do, so my recruiter brought me back to MEPS, and I renegotiated.

Ended up with 11B, un assigned Airborne. Best decision I ever made, after that, the good decisions in my life fall off quick

Why did I go Infantry? "cause you can learn to fix trucks, weld, etc. anywhere, But there is only one place ya gonna learn to close with and destroy the enemy. They try, but no one else can really talk shit to ya, not even LEG infantry.

Mom cried & did the dishes, the morning the recruiter came to get me, Dad didn't even get out of bed.

DragonDoc, theres multiple variations of the story/joke, most I heard were with Rangers and Paratroopers.

Coasties, after I got out of the Army(I told ya, the smart decisions fell of fast) the Coast Guard wouldn't take me. Got to give it to them, they are the few, that are actually doing the job, every day, war or no war.

I was a civilian LEO before joining the Army, so 95B (Military Police) seemed like a natural fit. After 10 years active Army and 2 years Army Guard, I switched sides to the Air Force. My civilian job was in IT and the Army wouldn't let me re-class, so the Air Guard took me in as a 3C0X1.

Navy Avation Ordnanceman. Left for boot camp the day I turned 17.

I wanted to join the Air Force, but their recruiter was always out to lunch. Literally.
After 3 trips at different times to see the Air Force guy and him never being there, the Navy office was across the hall with the door open. The petty officer sitting at his desk yelled " When you gonna give me a shot at ya ? "

He was pretty persuasive, and he was an Aviation Ordnanceman.

P273X0 / J1C2X1: USAF Combat Control. Partly following in family footsteps but mainly because it was what I knew best in the AF...and I figured getting an FAA Air Traffic Control certification couldn't hurt for life after the military. After spending 6-months getting my rating made me realize I would have to be in some dire straits financially to work in a tower for a long-term job.

The CG is no longer part of the military. It's part of DHS.

Sunday, November 15, 2009 Home | Special Operations News | Two Guardians Complete SEAL BUD/S Program Two Guardians Complete SEAL BUD/S Program

    Admiral Thad Allen Coronado, CA
    – Two Guardians made history today by graduating from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEALs (BUD/S). According to Admiral Thad Allen, "They were the first Guardians to ever do so, and while they still have an intensive training program to complete before pinning on their Tridents in the spring, this is an impressive accomplishment and we should all be very proud of our shipmates and their performance representing the U.S. Coast Guard amongst the elite Navy SEALs."

The graduates have been training in Coronado, CA, since January and their BUD/S class formed in March. Still on the horizon for them is parachute training, the Junior Officer Training Course and SEAL qualification training.

As some additional updates for this program, one of the Coast Guard officers who also began training in January but was injured will "class up" to continue his journey early this month. The deadline for applications for next year's program has passed and the USCG is moving into the assessment and selection process. This year the USCG received 16 applicants (10 officers, 6 enlisted).

Thats wierd I wonder how this can happen then??? I think a little more research would explain how the USCG is still the Smallest of the Armed Forces. Wouldn't that mean we didn't have officers and enlisted anymore or a Union Jack on our Cutters? Maybe we shouldn't be patrolling the Gulf then? Or have our LEDETS/TACLETS riding the Navy Ships..? I wonder why my retirement check that I just started getting doesn't come from DHS? Or why the Veterans Administration even talks to me? I need to do up one of those demotovational posters he-he "So easy a Coastie could do it!"-WW

Wetwork, very nice story about Coasties graduating BUDs.

Anyway, on to the actual facts. The Coast Guard became part of the DHS in 2002. Don't tell me stories about your paychecks, use Google and look it up for yourself and deal with the facts.

    Googled??

    Authority as an armed service
The five uniformed services that make up the Armed Forces are defined in 10 U.S.C. § 101(a)(4):

The term "armed forces" means the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard is further defined by 14 U.S.C. § 1:

The Coast Guard as established 28 January 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times. The Coast Guard shall be a service in the Department of Homeland Security, except when operating as a service in the Navy.

We were DOT when I first enlisted..then after 9/11 we transferred "intact" to the DHS. I get the "Coasties aren't part of the Armed Forces all the time he-he! " Its all good!!!. Douglas Monroe recieved the Blue Medal with the little White stars saving a bunch of Marines during WWII. Civilians can't get that one. Opinions are hard to change on the Net so I just posted a few things. Fair Winds!-WW
