Likely barrel life of Steyr Scout?

    Anybody have any legitimate idea?

Since it's cold hammer forged and hard chrome lined I'd say 15,000 trigger pulls if it's not abused terribly (that is not repeatedly heated to a very high extent). How long will it shoot under or at 1 MOA? maybe 2/3rds of that life. Maybe longer.

gosh, I think I saw somewhere that Steyr expects to get 20-30K out of their chrome line barrels.

I'd say 25K if I had to guess tho.

How long would it take to put 30k through a bolt action rifle?
In no way do I make any money from anyone related to the firearms industry.

Well, I shoot every weekend. I suspect I would probably shoot the SS every month...maybe 60 rounds. My guess is that the barrel has a useful life of 15,000 round before it starts to degrade to the point it is annoying. So you are looking at about 5 years. Not too bad.

Greg, it *could* last longer depending on how it's used and how you load your ammo. You already know that throat wear and wear at the muzzle is what kills a barrel. If you properly load or if factory ammo is close to ideal and you run it warm - not hot - then twenty thousand is possible. How long will it shoot 3/4 MOA? 10 to 15,000 of those; far closer to 15,000 if the caveats listed above are true. By that time after a thorough cleaning it may shoot just outside of 1 MOA.

BTW, I'm no expert; not by a long shot but I'm smart enough to surround myself with experts in all manner of minutiae - including PhDs and test engineers in the more arcane aspects of engineering (especially as related to autos and firearms - especially metallurgy).

I have a phenomenal e-mail conversation from Mike Rock that I'll cut and paste here once I dig it up.

Actually, after re-checking my math. It looks more like 20 years.
