Finally got by my local AR guy and picked up one of the Gappers.

An about 80-90% improvement over having the empty gap, but the item itself has slightly protruding edges that could still be felt.

Removal, followed by a little sand paper before re-installing, took care of that. The inside edge of my middle finger is at last breathing a sigh of relief.

A totally effective solution for 3 bucks.

I'm no Gapper expert and have only installed one, but isn't it upside down? I installed mine so the short leg was down - it seemed to fit better and higher that way. Note where the Gapper extends in relation to the roll pin:

IIRC the instructions for the Gapper say long side down.

While it does protrude past the ears on most guns, you're dealing with a wide and flat piece of rubber with some give to it vs. two thin ears made of metal with no give.

I never thought to round one off, or install it upside down. I guess I was just always happy not to have the sharp edges and never thought if the Gapper itself could be improved.

Aha! I didn't have the instructions when I installed mine. Good to know that it can work either way if needed!

I believe the reason for the short side is that it's theoretically possible to install it that way without removing the grip, especially if you get it wet or lube it up first, and even if that doesn't work you can simply back the grip out a few turns. I've never had to take one all the way off, but I don't recall ever getting it on without at least loosening the screw.

Dummy me -- I just punched out the trigger guard roll pin.
