    Burris XTR- anybody using these?

I am looking for input on these scopes. I've never used one, but I have inspected other Burris products and find the glass to be comparable to Leupold glass in the mid-range price points. I wonder if a) that comparison holds up with the XTR vs LR/T scopes and b) if the XTR is a good piece of kit in general?

I am exploring options for a intermediate range precision rifle (KD out to 200m and open fields out to about 500-600m) that I recently acquired. I am of the "buy once, cry once" school, but if the scopes are of similar quality, I wouldn't be opposed to saving a few hundred bucks. I am eyeballing the XTR 3-12x50 and the Leupold 3.5-10x40 withOUT illum, both with mil-dot. It seems like the Burris can be had for about $200-275 less.

I am very open to being pointed in other directions, too, btw. I am at the stage where I am trying to find out what I DON'T know!

Base rifle is a stock (for now) SPS Tactical in .308. I *think* I like a 40mm objective, and I *think* I want to keep it relatively simple since this is not really meant to be a serious rifle, per se.

    What say you?

As soon as mine arrives I'll post a review. I have a LaRue SPR mount waiting and all ready to go.

In the meantime search the forum here, there are a couple good strings on the XTR-14 and in is also mentioned in some of the 1-4X threads.

    Are you LE?

What are you installing yours on and what are you using for a mount?

    not LE

Thinking of the 3-12x50 as an option for an SPS Tactical.

    Matt,

I wish I knew something about the scope that you are looking at. You want the XTR 3-12X and I have their XTR 1-4X back-ordered. The feedback I have read on the XTR scopes online has all been positive, I don't think your money would be misspent if you picked one up. Shotgun News recently reviewed the scope you are looking at but I know I have already thrown out my issue. I like where you are going with your build.

    Good luck,

    Ken

Its not mine but a friend has one w/illum on a FN PBR. He got an awesome deal on a "used" one that appears to have never been mounted but did have a small scratch on it.

The glass is very crisp and clear, shoots well, and seems well built. Light transmission is good but not as good as the Leopold. We did not really notice this until we were shooting both his rifle and another rifle with a Leupold MR/T at dusk with both scopes set at the same magnification. Then the difference became apparent. We had to turn on the illum in the XTR in order to continue to accurately engage targets that we could still hit using the Leupold with the illum off.

You mentioned not wanting the illum in your post. If that is because you do not intend to shoot in conditions that might require it, the XTR is a good piece of glass at a really good price. If you ever think low light shooting might be necessary, I would look at the XTR w/illum or, better yet, the Leupold w/illum.

I am running a XTR 6-24X50 and find it to be a excellent scope. The adjustments are for half inch and not quarter but other than that, in my opinion it rivals leupold.
