I use a low profile gas block from PRI.
Steel, seals very nice, and is easy to install.

Shave your front sight or get a gas block pinned on. There is no substitute for a gas block being pinned. Do not use aluminum.

Another good option would be a longer rail and keeping your front sight.

And the don't need any tools option.

How does the LaRue gas block work with barrels that have been taper pinned? Do the set screws go into the pin grooves, or do you have to drill out some dimples into the barrel?

I'm pretty much doing the same thing and was going to use the Daniel Defense gas block to go under a LaRue 11" rail, but it sounds like that option isn't going to work. No kidding, I just got the DD block in the mail not 20 minutes ago when I saw this thread. Dangit!

My favorite low profile gas block so far has been the Noveske marked Vltor blocks that have a set screw and are drilled for a 1/8" pin. If you choose to you can run a taper reamer through to fit a taper pin and you can stake the set screw in place for added security. I've used two DD clamp style blocks and they are pretty much only useful with their rails in my opinion, still there are better options. I'm sticking with Vltor in the future.

They can be pinned. Mine has been pinned by ADCO. You can see the pin, unfortunately the barrel cut isn't visible.

If I decide to cut down my existing FSB (I think this is the way I will go) can I just leave it on the barrel, or would you advise removing it? Also, is there any certain spec that I need to trim to? Or just as long as the rail fits over it?

Thank you very much for the replies, gentleman.

Here's mine, keep in mind this started as a normal front sight block. I used a 4" angle grinder.

Look, it's still "F" marked, it must be good.

+1 I agree this is what I plan on doing, it maintains the pins which are more secure than screws, it also has the advantage of being much cheaper utilizing parts you already have and gives you the enjoyment of doing it your self, grind it smooth it down with the dremel and either paint it black or if your feeling froggy order a teflon type bake on finish and spray it. It'll take a little time but is worth it.

The front sight or gas block is drilled and reamed while on the barrel. No two are exactly alike so once they are drilled it is an assembly that stays together.
