Great minds. I too have an ACOG Compact (on an M4gery) and multiple Garands. And 1911s. No beard, though. Currently recovering from shoulder surgery but hope to be back up to speed by late spring.

Good for you for hitting the range together. I assume that you bring him a cold one when the guns are cleaned and put away as a good son should.

He took Dave Pennington's Concealed Carry I with me earlier this year, and did pretty well.

That's awesome! Your dad looks like a BA! My dad is the same way about the M14 as your dad is about the Garand. I was really happy when I had the money to buy him a NM M1A for Father's Day a few years ago.

My son's first was a Marlin "little buckaroo".

He's now 34 and while rooting through my safe yesterday, he discovered it and wondered how old his now 18 month old son would have to be to go shooting with him.

Hah, no, he gave up drinking a long while ago. Just coffee now.

Yep, did basically the same thing a few years ago, I got him a standard model M1A, that the guys at the Springfield Custom Shop rebuilt into an all GI gun after we had an issue with it. Dad was issued a M14 two weeks before he got out of the military in 1963.

Here he is using it in at the Vickers Tactical Battle Rifle Class down in South Hill, VA, 2007.

    Working with cover:

Off hand work at distance while Vickers is watching:

And to SteyrAUG and Grant, and all the other guys who have lost their fathers, my deepest sympathies. My dad and I didn't have the greatest relationship while I was growing up, but we've been making up for lost time.

Thanks. And sometimes things aren't always perfect, at least you guys are fixing it.

And I'm sorry if my post was kind of a downer on an otherwise happy topic.

Great post Templar! I have fond memories of shooting with my Pops. Sadly like some of the other guys I lost him much to soon. My Dad and I didn't always have the greatest relationship either. But we tried to make up for lost time later in life. Now that I've learned a little I'm trying not to make the same mistakes with my son, since now I'm the "Old Man"

    Bringing this thread back up.....

I took my father out for some well deserved R&R and range time this afternoon.

Both his M1 Garand and he are 70 years old, the Garand having been built in March of 1941 and my father in February of '41.

......and letting him get some trigger time on a HK USP Tactical with a Gemtech can.

And I spent the afternoon chopping out a bazillion tree roots and destroying my rotator cuff to put a dry well in the backyard.

You definitely made the wiser decision. Looks like a great day--nothing like celebrating Father's Day early.
