Shave FSB or new low profile gas block?

So here's what Im thinking. I'm edging closer to ordering parts for my first AR (first I was gonna build, then buy whole, now I'm back to the build idea, haha). I want to put a Troy 10" rail on the gun, but will need to make some changes to the front block.

My question: Shave the existing or buy and install new low profile gas block under the rail? (which lp block isn't important now-maybe another thread down the road)

for me, when i have built rifles in the past, i just buy a low profile gas block instead of cutting down one with a front sight on it. the way i see it, even though it isnt seen underneath the rail system, i dont like cutting corners. that and it is less work to install a new one than remove the block, cut it, and then re-install. to top it off, i pay particular attention to fit and finish of my rifles.

thats the way ive been leaning, but im wondering if a user installed lp gas block will have the same strentgh as a factory installed FSB thats shaved down. Id feel a little silly if i installed it improperly and it somehow worked its way out while shooting.

Shave the FSB or buy a VLTOR or LaRue gas block and pin it. Both are excellent means of keeping it from moving, shaving it is cheaper.

Shave it. Then if you screw it up or decide you didn't like it then go buy a low-profile gas block to replace it.

Shave it. If you don't want to do it yourself, take it or send it to Robb at Va Arms Co. He does excellent work.

    Shave it.

I've done a couple of em now and it's not hard to do. If you take the time they will turn out looking great, but that doesn't really matter since it will be hidden under a rail.

Cheaper, and pinned from the factory, you can't get better than that.

I've got one drying right now. There is no gas block that is going to as reliable as a pinned on one for the long haul. Today I took a hack saw(10 min.), followed by a bench grinder(20 min.), followed by a dremel (10 min.), and flat black header paint. As each front site tower is installed on each barrel the fit is excellent and the gas port holes line up perfectly. It is a win/win. I don't think there is a lower profile available. The only reason I can think of to use something else is if you might want to return the weapon to original form at a later date.

My vote would be to shave it. Unless you are going to have someone pin the LP block, then do whichever...
