    Uvis- The part in red is correct and incorrect. As the water cools, up until around 4C, it is going to sink. After that it will then rise. As I said, I have no prob. admitting I'm wrong, I'll just need to see your results that are repeatable. You buy the first beer. BTW, you know that Wiki is not a resource accepted by any academic body.

    Just read an academic paper on ice formation that laid out many scenarios.

    I concede the point. Water will form at the top first for many reasons. How about I buy the first beer? I guess I simply didn't consider the all possible reasons about ice formation in my initial statements. Hell, maybe I just wasn't paying attention, or assumed(you know what they say), about the ice in my bottles while hiking. My experiment today was inconclusive and a more thorough trial would have revealed the facts.

    I stand corrected. I guess I was missing something.(see earlier statement)
