Saw it! Decent show.
If you aren't armed when you take a dump in your own home then your opinion on what is a practical daily carry weapon isn't interesting to me.
Another History Channel survival flick on tonight at 9pm is called Apocalypse Man, demonstrating survival techniques.
For God and the soldier we adore, In time of danger, not before! The danger passed, and all things righted, God is forgotten and the soldier slighted." - Rudyard Kipling
Why make this assumption? A used ACOG on a LaRue mount and a used Aimpoint H-1 on a LaRue 724 cost far less than a Short Dot, give you just about the same capability and far better battery performance. Arguably more, since the ACOG has a BDC. And if you use an RCO mount, a Troy or KAC BUIS will fit on the upper receiver.
"The very purpose of a Bill of Rights was to withdraw certain subjects from the vicissitudes of political controversy, to place them beyond the reach of majorities and officials and to establish them as legal principles to be applied by the courts." Justice Robert Jackson, WV St. Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943)
"I don’t care how many pull ups and sit ups you can do. I care that you can move yourself across the ground with a fighting load and engage the enemy." Max Velocity
ChicagoTex- Couldn't disagree with you more. We are not all fu**** if it all goes to sh**. Many people do make substantial preps. that don't send them to the poor house or make their house look like a hoarder's. Some do move to better locations. Lots of beautiful country out there to live, work, and raise a family. The wife and I are gearing up for a move to an area such as this. Contract should be signed by next week, fly out in approx. 2 months for rental search, move in around 4 months. Then search for home and land site. Many late night discussions but decided to do it. Found area that meets all needs. Macy's, etc. for her within an hour's drive, land & H2O, good people, good schools, etc. Some of the most remote lands in the USA within an easy drive, donkey ride, walk, etc. Millions of acres of wilderness to get into if push comes to shove.
Large percentage of surviving is attitude.

I make $8 an hour and live in a one-bedroom apartment. If I can't afford the cost/space to handload I sure as shit can't afford to stockpile for Armageddon.
Nor would I want to, based on two crucial points:
1. The chances are so apallingly remote of a national-level or bigger cataclysmic event that I feel to "plan" for such a thing would be most generously described as an epic waste of time and funds
and 2. If such an event did occur, I wouldn't be particularly interested in surviving anyway. In my opinion, you can absolutely reach a point where your quality of life sucks so much life literally isn't worth living anymore.
I'm glad to hear things are going well for you and your family and that you've found a place to live and a decent job that allows you to plan for this most remote of contingencies without bringing about undue hardship on yourself. Not all of us have it like you.

more like $25 now but the point remains
you can also get a few bags of wheat and barley and beans for not a lot of money. Get some buckets and gamma lids and some O2 reducing packets to keep it for a longer amount of time. (Get fancy with mylar bags if you want to but just putting it in a bucket with good seal and O2 reducer will help a lot).
Then, see what canned goods you normally eat and increase your supply of that slowly and try and rotate it so you use the oldest first. When we shop we buy an extra 6-pack of soup, or a "case"* of canned vegetables when on sale, or whatever, extra and then as we use them we use the oldest first.
We probably have enough wheat and rice for a year for our family, and enough beans and other stuff for several months, plus enough canned goods for several months. Most of it was gathered at a slow pace and it does not take up a ton of room either. A couple of those wire shelves from costco and one other large shelf from costco and a small amount of floor space in the basement.
in addition we have our 72 hour kits with water and MREs plus some duffles with more mres and water for short term getting out of dodge needs.
* needed to put something quoted in this reply somewhere...
