Getting gassed in the face (and not the good gas)

Noticed the problem this weekend while shooting my AR at distance.

I have a BCM 16" carbine upper with BCM full auto BCG, normal carbine buffer (also BCM) and a gas busters charging handle and I kept getting CLP/gas blown into my face while shooting. I've been planning on swapping out the gas busters with a BCM Gunfighter for about a week before I experienced this problem, so that might solve it but that's just a guess on my part.

Any thoughts or suggestions as to what might be causing it? The upper is pretty new (less than 500 rounds) and it should be in spec because its BCM

    Thanks, guys!

Do you run the BCG wet like you are supposed to?

ETA - I have no experience with the Gas Buster CH so I can't comment there, however a wet BCG can "spray" a little under use.

Yeah, I run it wet - that's why I said I was getting hit with CLP in the face

    Ah!

Derp, derp. I somehow read gas as CLP. I'm the asshole.

It's bed time for me since I can't read.

It's no problem; I know that running it wet will result in CLP being blown back, but should I be getting gas blown back as well? I have friends with ARs who DON'T run gas busters (again, don't know if that's the issue) who don't have this problem.

If you are getting oil blown back through the receiver on a non suppressed gun with a gas buster you have got to have way to much oil in your receiver group. I only have a slight problem with a 10" suppressed gun when I run it wet so you might try a little less lube. You may also just be getting the oil and some of the burn off from that, not necessarily gas. Just a thought.

BCG should have a light coat of lube.
Unless you went wild it's usually a self-correcting problem after the first few shots.

I wasn't under the impression I had too much on there, and I didn't reapply any after starting. I'll wipe down the BCG and see if that improves it.

    Thanks, guys.

There's also a mod that's popular with HP shooters. They use some RTV silcone and bed the CH in way to provide a better seal. I've seen someone describe it on this board, you may get lucky with a search, otherwise check out www.usrifleteams.com

I found that the PRI Gas Buster charging did almost nothing to keep lube and gases from blowing back into my face. The PRI Gas Buster has two bumps on the bottom side of the charging handle. Most of the gases and lube that blow back into your face come from the top side of the charging handle (if you look at the top side of the charging handle you can see a gap, this is where most of the gases and lube that blows back in your face come from)

I was taugh a simple, cheap, and very effective do it yourself gas buster modificiation several years ago. I have even done this to my PRI Gas Buster charging handle. This technique costs less than $5, it's more effective than the $90 Gas Buster charging handle, and can be done to ANY charging handle:
