    LEO AR-15 Carry Policy

Does your department give you special preference for being prior military in order to carry your AR? I heard Los Angeles PD doesn't require prior military to take the physical test, just pass the course. My dept wants you to pass the physical test first before doing anything else.

Our department gives picks shooters. Some are formal mil guys some are not. Marksmanship and tactical ability are the deciding factors.

Nope, mine doesn't. Just because you were in the military doesn't mean you are a good marksman or are tactically sound. Veterans have to go through the same patrol rifle course that everyone else does as well as having the same qualification requirements.

At my department, when a carbine class becomes available, you just need to gain your shift lieutenant's permission to attend. At the course, there are two different qualifications and a night fire that you have to pass in order to carry a rifle on duty.

Then again, there are people on the job that shouldn't even be carrying a gun. Who am I to judge anyway? As long my team and myself come home at the end of the tour, it really doesn't matter to me. Be safe out there.

No exemptions here. Everyone must pass the rifle school / qualification course in order to be "certified" for AR usage/carry.

I guess I wasn't clear when I started the thread. You definitely have to pass the courses that go with the rifle. What I meant to say is that are you exempt from the physical test, x amount of years on the job, etc, just for being prior military or even reserve? Sorry for the confusion

Not sure what you mean by physical test. The LAPD patrol rifle course is a 4 day class covering nomenclature, maniplulations test, basic shooting positions, and day and night qual courses. There is a run component to the day qual, but the night qual is not a disqualifier.

While prior military is not required, it may (or may not) be helpful.

At my dept. prior military doesn't mean squat. Our policy says you have to have five consecutive years law enforcement to be able to go through the patrol rifle course. Of course you must provide your own weapon too, and must pass the course to carry it.

No prerequisites for rifle on my dept. Get your Captain to put you in for the 2 day patrol rifle class, pass all the requirements and you're certified on rifle. You have to provide your own AR, which can be from various mfg.'s, it just has to pass muster with the armorer. At least they provide the training and duty ammo.
