11-87 problems

Ok, so Ive had a 11-87 for 7 years now, was the first gun I ever bought(day I turned 18 matter of fact haha)

The problem Im having is with the Smooth-bore 18.5in barrel that I have. Its a Remington barrel, but I cant shoot anything but Buckshot or Slugs thru it otherwise I does no cycle. The Gun works flawlessly with the factory broom stick barrel and the Deer Barrel I have.

I want to use this as my 3gun Shotgun, and need to get it working before April 3rd(first 3gun match).

Does anyone know of a fix, or a barrel that will allow me to use shotshells?

What shotshells are you using?

You need to use a shotshell with 1 1/4 oz and 3 3/4 dram equal. Try the Winchester high brass 7 1/2 shot.

This should give you enough gas pressure to operate your action.

I agree with Buck. I think the O-rings need to be replaced.

The shorter 11-87 barrels are not designed to function with light loads (barrels shorter than 26" are not equipped with the pressure-compensating gas system)

One fix would be to get another "broomstick" barrel and have it cut down to your preferred length.

If the gun is a Premier or Special Purpose with a barrel length shorter than 26" it will not be pressure compensated and will only function properly with magnum ammunition. A field barrel or target barrel can be interchanged on 1187 3" guns to allow the use of lighter loads. This does not pertain to 1187 Super Mags.

But is his gun a premier or SP?

Guess that would be handy to have said but my gun in a Premier. I ordered one of the activators plus a couple other things to try and help. If they don't I guess I'm not gonna be able to use this gun.

Worn, torn, hard O-rings as said above. Also make sure the gas ports in the barrel are clear of build up. I use the commercial pipe cleaners (with the stiff nylon wires built in) along with generous amounts of hoppe's.

Check O-ring assembly for worn O-ring and that the assembly is installed properly.

11-87 barrels less than 26" are not pressure-compensated for light field loads. You need standard-pressure buck or slug. Light-recoil loads may fail to function.

While you are at it, pull the stock and clean the spring in the stock.

All you need to do is add a second O-ring/barrel seal when using lighter loads. Just remember to switch back when you go back to shooting full power loads...if not you'll feel it for sure!
