Looking for 5.56 barrier round advice...

    Doc,

I am considering laying in some 5.56 ammunition for barrier penetration. I have some older Winchester 64gr Power Point ammo, and was under the impression that it would do the job. It's 1999 era X223R2. I was under the impression that at some point, Winchester changed the construction of the bullet but I cannot recall the details.

Would this be suitable for the admittedly very unlikely need of penetrating auto glass/vehicles, or should I spend the money on something more modern like the Hornady 83285 (only recommended round I can locate)?

    Thank you

The Win 64 gr JSP has been on the state contract for quite a while; it offers good performance of soft targets, but is lacking against auto windshields.

    Federal Tactical

As DocGKR has done extensive research, I would follow his advice as it recently helped me convince the admin that we should stay with the Federal TBBC.

I've just heard that both those bullets are good on car doors and auto glass. I have no firsthand experience nor the research to back that up.

Have you had any experience with either?

As Doc mentioned in his 5.56 duty load thread, any "bonded" soft point will get the job done. Here's the Federal Tactical Bonded in 55gr:
