Looking forward to your review of the boonie packer redi-catch rob_s

Love magpul stuff but I question the wisdom of bolting on an extended lever of that size on the bolt catch.

I used this device on my carbine throughout the recent 3 day Staff/Mod class down at U.S. Training Center.

If you make enough of anything eventually you'll see some failures.

This goes for cars, guns, watches, tractors, computers whatever. Look at Toyota....

I have pretty much made my mind up to buying the boonie packer bolt catch.
Still would like to see a review.

Agreed. That is why I followed that statement with this...

If I was a competition shooter, I would have no problem running the BAD lever. The speed gained is noted. Just not confident enough in it for life or death matters, at this point.

Shit breaks. Replace it and drive on. My last deployment was as an armorer/armory night babysitter. I'd hate to have to list all of the parts I replaced over the course of the deployment. I don't think it's a matter of bad parts. Just the fact that small metal parts will break, wear, and need replacing. It should, at best, give you a clue to keep spares on hand. Also, anything that is added as an aftermarket or user mod is outside of the spec that that individual parts was designed for. When I was a young PVT/PFC/LCPL in the early ninetys, I used my K-pot to pound shelter half stakes stakes in the ground. I'm positive the manufacturer never intended that use for it.

As a note, I use the Magpul bad on three of my carbines with no ill effects due to parts breakage.

Me not a BAD has to do with the fact they only fit one of my bolt catches, and are very loose on everything else (Colt, LMT, CMT). I dont want a part like that on only one gun, and not anything else I shoot, too.

FWIW you can get a Colt part from Brownells, and they have a good LE/mil discount.

Looks like a weak part that was brought to light by the BAD, and not really that the BAD will cause this with a good part. First Ive heard of this particular breakage with a BAD. Most complaints are loose fit on the bolt catch paddle, and the bolt not locking back. Aside from the fitment issues for me it also caused the bolt lock back to not be anything close to reliable in my SR15 which is the only bolt catch I have the BAD will fit correctly on.

The idea behind the BAD is sound but I think this particular iteration of that idea is poor. Works for some, and doesn't for many.

Good on you. You'd be suprised how many parts break in a 6-7 month deployment cycle. Spares are your friend. It's a good idea to carry a spare parts box wherever you take your guns and training. There was a good thread on here a while back that had a few shots of spare parts boxes. They can be anything from simple or in Stick's case, enough to take care of an entire squad, shit maybe a platoon.

Even the best parts will break, as long as you are getting good training out of it.
