I had several hundred full-auto Bushmaster M4geries that I outfitted with the McFarland rings. They all performed as expected.

    Much appreciate the info, Blankwaffe.

By the way, have any of y'all successfully run the one-piece rings on an M4A1?

Got the one-piece rings in from Grant today. Will throw them on a few M4A1's tomorrow morning and report back.

Installed the one-piece rings on a straight-from-the-factory M4A1 bolt and a well-used M4A1 bolt this morning. Both bolts had plenty of tension inside their carriers with the new rings and both ran like champs in semi and full.

It appears my earlier suspicion regarding the bolt carriers was unfounded. The problem was obviously with the one-piece rings from Brownells. I'll be returning those if possible.

Thanks for providing the information and advice throughout, folks. Much appreciated.

All of the ones I purchased for our Bushamsters in Iraq came from Brownells and they all worked 100%. The ones in my personal carbines also came from Brownells as well and they too are 100%.

I have a JP bolt with a pre-installed McFarland gas ring and it will not pass the carrier table stand to save my life. The carrier is JP branded as well.
The bolt however will not fall out when pointed to the ground.

With that said, it functions flawlessly with a variety of ammo.

I guess there must be a batch of these things out there that are slightly undersized.

All of the ones I purchased for our Bushamsters in Iraq came from Brownells and they all worked 100%.
Were they "Fulton Armory" McFarlands, per chance? I know the ones I ordered were. Just wondering if McFarland subcontracts to Fulton or Fulton also produces them under the "McFarland" name......

At any rate, I'll stick to the ones that Grant is selling, as they seem to work in my guns.

Thanks again for the info and replies.

i dont know that the carrier weight test is a reliable test for the mcfarland rings. the test is only to establish that three-piece rings are nearing the end of their expected life, due to wear from friction created by spring tension. not passing the test when new only indicates that the test won't be an indicator of when they need replacing- not that you're likely to have any problems with the ring.
