Oh by the way RyanB we don't teach our shooters about type 3 malfunctions. We teach them how to get the gun up and running. They have 2 choices. Immediate action I.E. SPORTS or Remedial actions. If that isn't working hope your good with a pistol because they are taught to transition.
Do you have a better way to clear two rounds jammed together in the barrel extension? I've cleared malfunctions like that, and it works.
Transition if the threat is at short range (25m is the rule of thumb) or get cover and clear the malfunction if the threat is at long range. Thats how I was taught to do it.
Everything I learned about operating the AR15 I learned from Pat Rogers and Gunsite. I'm not pulling this out of my ass.
If our shooters observe a double feed they are trained to not just release the charging handle and make things worse. While keeping the charging handle to the rear we have them dump the mag. Most of the time when they drop the mag out the double feed goes with it with a little encouragment. If they didn't take the time to observe and just let the BCG go forward on a double feed then yes they are screwed and must find a way to get the double out. Most of them do shove their fingers up the magwell and dig them out. Quick question has anyone ever had cases get above the bolt between it and the reciever?
SPORTS is dead.
IA - is Immediate action
#1 as M4 Guru pointed out - TRANSITION. (if you can)
These days every clown and his dog get a sidearm here anyway -- maybe the big army should start investing in soldier skills.
I run and teach Tap - Rack - Bang for pistol and carbine - why, it shortens your OODA loop and gets you back in the fight sooner. The sooner your putting round down range the soone the En is dead and less chance for them to get good hits on you.
The forward assist IMHO serves no justifiable purpose on the weapon these days.
IF the IA does not work -- then you need to work on secondary stoppages and mechanical breakdown.

The correct tool for the situation. SPORTS served its purpose for a bunch of non-shooting recruit to be able to deal with most malfunctions on the M-16. We all (should) know that the predominant cause of malfunction for semi or full-auto firearms is the magazine.
When I went through Infantry OSUT, I was issued a rifle that was made my GM's Hydramatic Corporation that had a solid buttstock. The magazines we were issued were probably even older than this rifle. Back then SPORTS was very helpful in allowing me to clear most of the malfunctions I experienced while at the range.
With the advent of tactical latches and such, the only time I ever use SPORTS is when I have a malfunction while zeroing my ARs (NOTE: I rarely have malfunctions in those situations). Do I still use the FA? Yes I do. As a habit, I give it two pushes whenever I load the first magazine. Why? It's a reminder that I am now loaded and that I should be "fully switched on". I do this with all my ARs to include my Varminter.
SPORTS is nothing more than a version of "tap-rack-bang" that was deviced to be specific to the M-16. It's a "pneumonic training device" that helps burnt-out recruits to remember what they should do in case of a malfunction.
IMHO, all this argument for or against SPORTS is nothing more than an exercise in ego-stroking and chest-thumping. No matter if you still use SPORTS or not (for whatever reason); it is still a usefull tool when incorporated into Basic Rifle Marksmanship training of new shooters. The more "advanced" and more "tactical" shooters should really consider a more advanced approach to clearing malfunctions. JM2CW.

I'm a little slow being a simple grunt but it seems like this entire thread is about what cool name to call your IA.
Jax,
Yes I have had trainees get brass stuck between the bolt face and charging handle. You don't always need a tool but it helps. Somoetime you can push the bolt rearward with you finger while holding the charging handle forward to relieve the pressure on the case.
Back to SPORTS. IN the old days when we taught M16's without the FA, we used Tap-Charge-Bang or Shoot. Another note about the "observe" step. If you see an empty case come out when you "Pull" and "Observe", the cause could be a light recoil, so I will not have my students ignore that step.
Almost forgot, tugging on the magazine after insertion is in the ops manual so it should be taught as well.
