    Almost nothing funnier than seeing someone on the line dancing around with a piece of hot brass on their neck...

    Oniak,

    A while back I experimented with a barrel light mount and recorded temps with an IR thermometer at diff locations, temp test. The barrel reached 200-300+ deg F, and the handguards reached 100-120+ deg F (firing 300 rounds in 45 mins). This may/may not help...

    The Lefties used to do this when shooting the M16A1... damn, I felt bad for them. I remember firing a 20 round mag on full auto (at the range) at night and the barrel glowed orange (and melted the sandbag it was touching).

    I think that was more what the guy was looking for. It really depends on the specific class.

    I won't take classes that are based on volume of rounds sprayed. It's silly nonsense, a waste of ammo, and not realistic for civilian defensive rifle deployment.

    Small Arms Review did an article in July 06 concerning Socom's complaints of barrel failures;

    The first major investigation found the issue regarding blown barrels was clearly due to excessive operation beyond what the carbine was designed........

    The barrels would reach their transformation temperature that is between 1,100 and 1,375 degrees. At these temperatures the barrel becomes soft and loses its heat-treating. Structrual failure is just a matter of time. According to Rock Island's testing, to get the barrel to this temperature you would have to fire 540 to 596 rounds within 3 to 3 1/2 minutes.
    I don't know if this is what you are looking for.
